Funky Friends Factory Blog

Maybe you’re curious why I’m going BIG this year?

I want to get a little bit serious (just for a change!) because I want to let you in on the reason behind this big thing I’m working on.

You might not believe it
but it’s taken a long time for me
to become comfortable telling people that I design soft toys for a living!

I trained as an optometrist and in comparison, sewing toys seemed a rather silly (even childish?) thing to do for a job! Often I think that there are so many awful things happening around the world, how can designing fluffy toys be a worthwhile thing to spend your whole life doing?

BUT over the years, having people tell me how much my toy patterns have meant to them… has meant so much to me!

The first time I remember being amazed by the effect my patterns could have on another person’s life was when I received an email from a lady who told me she made my Ellie Elephant for her friend who’s partner of 62 years had just passed away and she knew how much the elephant meant to her friend because she said its ears were wet from all her tears! Wow! I remember reading her email, with tears in *my* eyes, thinking how amazing it was to be able to make someone else feel a little better because of this ‘weird thing’ that I do!

At the end of each year
I look back at the creative journey I’ve been on with MY soft toy making and lately…

I’ve been thinking about the creative journey each of YOU is on, with YOUR toy-making. Whether you’re a beginner (“What is a bobbin, anyway? Did it come with my machine?”) or have heaps of experience sewing (“I wonder if I can make this Plattie Platypus in sequins?”)  I’ve been thinking about what I can do to make sure you have even more FUN sewing soft toys.

So I have challenged myself to come up with a way to make sure you’ll all be able to find the inspiration you need with Funky Friends…

I’ll be spilling all the beans soon – so WATCH THIS SPACE!!!!

  1. I firmly believe that whatever age you are there are times when you need a soft toy whether it is your favourite from your childhood (if it is still around) or a new one given to you by a dear friend or a family member.
I also think that if you love what you are doing nobody, absolutely nobody should judge you and let you feel your job is not worthwhile.
Making a soft toy is my challenge amongst my make 9 this year – the remaining 8 projects are some I am very comfortable making. I have my eye on your Diggles, the dragon – she would be my perfect companion ;-D

  2. Thanks for your lovely comments! 🙂 Your Make-9 sounds inetersting… I’m hoping Diggles isn’t too much of a challenge – he’s not one of my easiest patterns… but very popular! 😀
