stuffed toy fox pattern tutorial

I made this photo tutorial so you can see how to sew my Fox Sewing Pattern ~> scroll down for step-by-step photos!

She looks gorgeous in all sorts of fabric so no need to stick with a ‘quick brown fox’

Fox toy pattern

.

*** PLEASE NOTE – this is ONLY a PHOTO TUTORIAL ***
The FULL PATTERN IS NOT included here.

It is NOT A FREE PATTERN!

I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my fox toy pattern can SEE how to sew a fox toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Fifi Fox Sewing Pattern)

First choose some fox fabric:

STEP 1

A fox will look great in any fabric but if you like, it’s quite fun to use fox fabric for your fox… if you can find it! I fell in LOVE with Tula Pink’s Fox Nap fabric and they come in 3 colour ways!

fox fabrics

Let’s start with the EARS:

STEP 2

Sew one white and one main fabric EAR PIECE together. Repeat for the other EAR PIECES.

Fox-photo-tutorial-003

STEP 3

Trim the seams at the tip of the EARS and turn them right sides out.

Fox-photo-tutorial-007

STEP 4

Fold and pin the base of the EAR PIECES as shown on the pattern markings.

Fox-photo-tutorial-009

TIP: Make sure you fold them to opposite sides to make a RIGHT and a LEFT ear!!!

Fox-photo-tutorial-010

HEAD:

STEP 5

Sew the FRONT HEAD PIECES to the CHEEK PIECES,

Fox-photo-tutorial-013

…matching the single dot pattern marking.

Fox-photo-tutorial-015.2

STEP 6

Finger-press the seams open then sew the FRONT HEAD & CHEEK PIECES together along the middle seam.

Fox-photo-tutorial-017

TIP: If you are sewing the fox with dark thread change to white thread for sewing the CHEEK PIECES together.

Fox-photo-tutorial-017line

It means changing your thread… BUT I think it’s important because it looks ugly if you see a dark line of stitching running down the middle of your fox’s face when she’s stuffed! I actually unpicked this fox and re-sewed the head!!!!!

Fox-photo-tutorial-017arrow

STEP 7

Sew the BACK HEAD PIECES together along the middle seam as shown by the
dashed line of the pattern markings.

Fox-photo-tutorial-027

TIP: Finger press this seam open.

Fox-photo-tutorial-028

STEP 8

Pin the EARS in place on the FRONT HEAD PIECES using the pattern markings
to guide you with their position. (The fold of the EARS must be towards the middle
and facing/touching the right sides of the fabric!)

Fox-photo-tutorial-025

STEP 9

Sew the BACK HEAD PIECES to the FRONT HEAD & CHEEK PIECES along
the side seams, with the EARS in between.

Fox-photo-tutorial-030

STEP 10a

Clip the seams well, trim the seams at the sides of the CHEEK PIECES.

Fox-photo-tutorial-035

STEP 10b

Turn the head right sides out and make sure the CHEEK PIECES are turned out nicely. (I use a wooden chopstick to get the points turned beautifully!)

Fox-photo-tutorial-038

EYES:

STEP 11

If you are using craft eyes insert them now. (If you are embroidering the eyes, you will sew them after the fox is stuffed.)

insert craft eyes

TIP: I have a tutorial to show you how to insert craft eyes on my blog.

BODY:

STEP 12

Sew the BODY PIECES together from O – N, leaving the gap for the TAIL.

Fox-photo-tutorial-042.2

FRONT LEGS:

STEP 13

Sew the FRONT LEG PIECES to the TUMMY PIECE from A – B, matching
the dots.

Fox-photo-tutorial-047

STEP 14

Sew the TUMMY & FRONT LEGS PIECES to the BODY PIECES from C – A – E.

Fox-photo-tutorial-049

TIP: Here you can see that I have pinned both sides to sew at the same time but it is easier to sew one side at a time

Fox-photo-tutorial-053

STEP 15

Sew the FRONT FOOT PIECES together from E – D. Clip the seam very well.

Fox-photo-tutorial-044

STEP 16

Sew the FRONT FOOT PIECES to the BODY & FRONT LEG PIECES (G-E-G.)

fox-TWO-(5)

STEP 17

Sew the FRONT FOOT PIECES closed at the back from F – G, continue sewing the FRONT LEG closed from G – B – H.

fox-TWO-(7)

STEP 18

Sew 2 FOOT PAD PIECES to the FRONT FOOT PIECES, matching D and E.

fox-TWO-(11)

BACK LEGS:

STEP 19

Sew the INNER BACK LEG PIECES to the OUTER BACK LEG PIECES from J – K. Clip the seam very well

fox-TWO-(14)

***It is easy to get these pieces wrong way around***

so make sure you label points J and K on both pieces so you can match them up.

fox-TWO-(16)

STEP 20

Pin and sew the INNER & OUTER BACK LEG PIECES to the BODY & TUMMY PIECE from P – H – J- L.

* The INNER BACK LEG should be towards the front and the OUTER BACK LEG should be towards the back.

fox-TWO-(20)

STEP 21

Sew the tummy dart closed on the TUMMY PIECE at O.

fox-TWO-(25)

TIP: Again I like to change to white thread for this step so that you won’t see a dark like of stitching running up the TUMMY when she’s stuffed!

STEP 22

Fold the BACK FOOT PIECES and sew the foot dart closed at D on both BACK FOOT PIECES.

fox-TWO-(29)

STEP 23

Sew the BACK FOOT PIECES to the INNER & OUTER BACK LEG PIECES from M-K-M.

(I am holding the PIECES out of the way in the photo below, so you can see where I have pinned. Don’t forget you need to repeat on the other side!)

FOX-U-005

STEP 24

Sew the BACK FOOT PIECES closed at the back from F – M, continue sewing the INNER & OUTER BACK LEG PIECES closed at the back from M – L/P , then sew the TUMMY and BODY PIECES together from L/P – O.

FOX-U-012

STEP 25

Sew the other 2 FOOT PAD PIECES to the BACK FOOT PIECES, matching point D and F.

FOX-U-014

TAIL:

STEP 26

Sew the TAIL PIECES to the TAIL TIP PIECES in pairs matching the star markings.

Fox-photo-tutorial-060

STEP 27

Sew the TAIL&TIP PIECES together, remembering to leave the gap for stuffing.

Fox-photo-tutorial-062

TIP: Change to white thread to sew the white fabric of the TAIL TIP PIECES!

STEP 28

Clip the seams especially the curves and trim the seams at the tip of the TAIL TIP and turn the TAIL right sides out.

Fox-photo-tutorial-067

TIP: I use a chopstick to push the seams out nicely to get a nice point at the tip of the fox’s TAIL.

STEP 29

Push the tip of the TAIL between the BODY PIECES through the gap you left for the TAIL. (Roll up the tip pf the TAIL to fit more easily.) Sew the TAIL in position between the BODY PIECES.

Insert-tail

TIP: Secure the TAIL in place with a zig-zag stitch for extra strength.

zIG-ZAG-TAIL

JOIN HEAD TO BODY:

STEP 30

Pin and sew the head to the body at the neck seam. (Pin the CHEEK&BACK HEAD PIECES to the TUMMY&BODY PIECES.)

FOX-U-019

TIP: I find the best way to do this is to turn the head right sides out and position it, inside the body, so you can pin the pieces together at the neck seam, with the fabric right sides together.

FOX-U-016

STEP 31

Pull the HEAD back out of the body so all the PIECES are wrong sides out again. Pin and sew the fox closed at the back from N – Q on the BODY PIECES and from Q – R on the BACK HEAD PIECES, leaving the gap open for turning.

FOX-U-021

STEP 32

Clip the seams and turn the fox right sides out. Stuff the back legs, front legs, tummy and body, then the head, making sure to stuff the nose and neck very well. Stuff the tail. Sew the stuffing gaps closed on the BACK HEAD PIECES and the TAIL PIECES.

NOSE:

STEP 33

Cut the NOSE PIECE from felt and pin this in position using the photo of the fox to guide you.

*** If you are embroidering the eyes, do them now***

Fox-photo-tutorial-059

MOUTH:

STEP 34

Sew the mouth with black embroidery thread using the MOUTH SEWING DIAGRAM in the pattern to guide you.

Mouth-sewing-diagram---fox-toy

  1. Hide the starting knot under the felt of the NOSE.
  2. Sew in at A and come out at B.
  3. Sew in at D and out at C, pull the thread firmly to form half of the fox’s smile.
  4. Sew in and B and out at A, pull the thread firmly as before to form the other half of the fox’s smile.
  5. Sew in and B and out at A again to form the line between the nose and mouth.
  6. Make a knot at A and cut your thread. This finishing knot will be hidden under the felt of the NOSE.
  7. Sew the NOSE in place with embroidery thread and a blanket stitch.
