See me sew my Llama & Alpaca pattern

I made this photo tutorial so you can see how to sew my Llama Sewing Pattern ~> scroll down for step-by-step photos!

*** PLEASE NOTE – this is ONLY a PHOTO TUTORIAL ***
The FULL PATTERN IS NOT included here.

It is NOT A FREE PATTERN!

I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Llama & Alpaca Sewing Pattern can SEE how to sew a Llama or an Alpaca toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my LLOYD Llama & ALICE Alpaca pattern Sewing Pattern)

First choose some fabric:

STEP 1

Cut the FACE, FOREHEADEAR and FOOT PIECES from the contrast fabric and cut ALL of the rest of the pieces from the main fabric. A llama & Alpaca will look great in any fabric but if you like, it’s quite fun to use alpaca fabric!

Right, let’s start with the FACE:

STEP 2

Pin and sew the FACE PIECES together from A – B.

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-001

STEP 3

Pin and sew the FOREHEAD PIECE to the FACE PIECES matching point A.

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-008

TIP: Sew with the FOREHEAD PIECE down so you can smooth out any wrinkles in the FACE PIECES – no one likes wrinkles!

EARS:

STEP 4a

Sew the EAR PIECES together in pairs. Trim the seam allowance to about 3mm (1/8 inch).

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-023

STEP 4b

Turn the EARS right sides out.  Fold the EARS using the pattern markings to guide you.

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-027

STEP 5a

Pin the EAR in place on the BODY PIECE using the pattern markings to guide you with the position.

*** The fold of the EAR should be facing the right side of the fabric. ***

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-038

STEP 5b

Fold the BODY PIECE at the ear dart so the fabric is right sides together with the EAR PIECES sandwiched in between. Pin and sew the ear darts closed making sure you catch all the layers of fabric.

TIP: Check that the EAR looks like this photo below!

STEP 5c

Repeat for the other EAR. Fold the EARS down and pin them down (out the way).

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-048

STEP 6

Sew the BODY PIECES together from C – D leaving the turning gap open as well as the gap for the TAIL.

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-053

TAIL:

STEP 7a

Sew the TAIL PIECES together. Trim the seam allowance like you did with the EARS and turn the TAIL right sides out.

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-019

STEP 7b

Stuff a little toy stuffing into the TAIL and pin it closed along the straight edge.

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-033

STEP 8

Push the tip of the TAIL between the BODY PIECES through the gap you left for the TAIL. Pin and sew the TAIL in position between the BODY PIECES.

TIP: Secure the TAIL in place with a zig-zag stitch for extra strength.

STEP 9

Sew the FACE&FOREHEAD PIECES to the BODY PIECES matching point C and E. Take your time and use lots of pins so the pieces won’t pucker and cause wrinkles.

Alpaca-photos-2-010

TIP: Sew this seam with the FACE&FOREHEAD PIECES down so you can smooth out any wrinkles before you sew over them.

Alpaca-photos-2-015

STEP 10

Sew the FACE PIECES together from B – G and continue sewing the BODY PIECES closed at the front from G – H.

EYES:

STEP 11

If you are using CRAFT EYES insert them now. If you are embroidering the eyes you will do it after you stuff the toy, when you embroider the nose and mouth.

TUMMY & LEGS:

STEP 12a

Pin and sew the FRONT LEG PIECES and the BACK LEG PIECES to the TUMMY PIECE matching the dot pattern markings.

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-005

TIP: I find it easier to sew one FRONT LEG PIECE and one BACK LEG PIECE to the TUMMY PIECE first, but you can pin and sew all 4 at once.

STEP 12b

Repeat for the other side.

Alpaca-photo-tutorial-016

FOOT PIECES:

STEP 13

Sew 4 of the FOOT PIECES to the LEG PIECES  matching the star pattern markings.

Alpaca-photos-2-027

STEP 14

Sew the other 4 FOOT PIECES to the BODY PIECES  matching the star pattern markings.

TUMMY:

STEP 15

Pin the TUMMY, LEGS&FEET to the BODY, LEGS&FEET in 3 steps. See the Tummy Sewing Diagram for the 3 steps.

Tummy-Sewing-Diagram

TIP: You can sew it all in one step but you will need a LOT of pins!

Alpaca-photos-2-037

ASSEMBLY:

STEP 16

Clip the seams well especially at the curves and turn the toy right sides out through the turning gap.

Alpaca-photos-2-041

TIP: It makes turning easier if you push the FEET PIECES inside the BODY and then push the FACE PIECES out through the turning gap first.

STEP 17

Stuff the nose and face really well. This is important for when you sew the nose and mouth. Stuff the neck then the feet and legs firmly before finishing up with the tail area and tummy. Keep stuffing until the Alpaca/Llama can stand up nicely on it’s own.

Green-and-Pink-alpaca-and-llama-006

TIP: I use a children’s paintbrush when I stuff my soft toys. It’s really great when there are long legs and necks to stuff! It makes it much easier to push the toy stuffing in so it fills the toy firmly and it’s not lumpy.

NOSE and MOUTH:

STEP 18

Embroider the mouth and nose with black thread. Use the Nose and Mouth sewing diagram to guide you.

Nose-and-Mouth-sewing-diagram

  1. Push your needle in and come out at point A.
  2. Sew a stitch to make a loop and sew through the loop to secure your thread with a knot.
  3. Sew in at B and back out at A.
  4. Sew in at C and come back out at A to complete the nose.
  5. Sew in at D and come out at E. Pull the thread firmly to make it ‘sink into the face’ a bit to create a smile!
  6. Sew back in at D and come out at F.
  7. Sew back in at D and come out at A, pulling the thread firmly again.
  8. Sew another knot at A and sew the thread back in at A and come out at D. Pull the thread tight and snip it off at D.

STEP 19

Use a ladder stitch to close the opening on the BODY PIECES.
