Sew some sweet Halloween soft toys!

I made this photo tutorial so you can see how to sew my Bat Sewing Pattern ~> scroll down for step-by-step photos!

Bat & Boo Halloween toy sewing pattern

*** PLEASE NOTE – this is ONLY a PHOTO TUTORIAL ***
The FULL PATTERN IS NOT included here.
It is NOT A FREE PATTERN.

I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased the pattern can SEE how to sew a Bat and Ghost toy (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Batty & Boo sewing pattern!)

First choose some fabric…

You can sew my Bat Pattern from most fabrics AND you can use any colour – I LOVE the spotty fabrics for Boo the Ghost!

Right, let’s get sewing!

EARS:

STEP 1a

Sew the EAR PIECES together in pairs.

STEP 1b

Clip the seams well, and snip of the fabric at the tip of each ear then turn the EAR PIECES.

TIP: Use a blunt object like a wooden chopstick to turn the tips of the EARS so they are nice and pointy!

STEP 2

Fold the sides of the EAR PIECES inwards, as shown in the pattern markings, so that they overlap. (See the Ear Pinning Diagram below).

TIP: Make sure you have a left ear and a right ear! Lay them together with the open edges of the ears touching and check that the ‘top flap’ folds over the ‘bottom flap’ of each ear then pin the EAR PIECES like this.

STEP 3a

Pin the EARS to the BODY PIECES using the pattern markings to guide you.

STEP 3b

Fold the BODY PIECES at the ears darts, with the EAR PIECES in between/inside, as shown on the pattern markings.

STEP 3c

Check that the front of the EARS (with the flap/fold) face forwards first, then sew the darts closed.

WINGS:

STEP 4

Sew the WING PIECES together in pairs, leaving the straight edge open for turning (See the black arrow in the photo below). Clip the seams well and trim the seam allowance at the ‘tips’ of the WING PIECES so that they will turn nicely.

STEP 5a

Turn the WING PIECES right sides out. Use a turning tool to make sure the tips of the wings are nice and pointy!

STEP 5a

Pin the WING PIECES so that the seams lie flat.

STEP 6a

Using the pattern markings to guide you, transfer the top-stitching pattern marking lines to the fabric WING PIECES

TIP: I cut out parts of the WING PIECE template so I can trace the top-stitching pattern lines onto the fabric WING PIECES.

STEP 6b

Sew the top-stitching lines on the WINGS. It is important to follow the guide because this creates the space/channel at the top of each WING for a chenille stick!

STEP 7a

BEFORE inserting the chenille sticks, fold each wing along the dotted line, as shown in the pattern markings…

STEP 7b

… and sew a line of top-stitching across the top/front point of each wing.

TIP: This is VERY important to keep the wings in a “batty” folded position!

CHENILLE STICKS (“Pipe Cleaners”):

STEP 8a

Fold a chenille stick in half and…

STEP 8b

…push the folded end in between the WING PIECES as shown on the pattern markings. Leave the ends sicking out of the wing for now.

BODY:

STEP 9

Pin the wings to the BODY PIECES.

STEP 10a

PIN the TUMMY PIECES to the BODY PIECES, with the wings in between…

TIP: This is a hard seam to sew – so take it slow and use LOTS of pins!

STEP 10b

Make sure that you have a RIGHT ‘half bat’ and a LEFT ‘half bat’ then SEW the TUMMY PIECES and BODY PIECES together from A – B.

STEP 11

Push the wings down and leave them sticking out of the body (where the stuffing gap will be) so you can pin the two halves together along the centre seams.

STEP 12

Sew around the BODY & TUMMY PIECES, along the centre seam, from C – A (around the nose!) – B – D.

TIP: I find it helps to roll the WING PIECES up so they are out of the way as I sew this seam.

TACKING/BASTING:

STEP 13a

Clip the curved seams around the bat’s body.

STEP 13b

Fold the sharp ends of the chenille sticks back on themselves then bend one end forwards and one end backwards. Tack(baste) these ends to the fabric of the BODY & TUMMY PIECE seam. This will help the wings stay up and helps to keep the chenille stick ends out of the way when you stuff.

ASSEMBLY:

STEP 14

Turn the bat right sides out and use the wooden chopstick to make sure the seams are nicely turn especially around the nose, ears and back of the BODY  & TUMMY PIECES.

EYES:

STEP 15

If you are using craft eyes insert these now. If you are embroidering the eyes do these after the head is stuffed.

TIP: I have a tutorial to show you how to insert craft eyes on my blog.

craft-eyes-tutorial-How-to-insert

STUFFING:

STEP 16

Stuff the head and back of the body first and then stuff the rest of the body. The bat should be firmly stuffed to make sure the WINGS won’t flop.

STEP 17

Sew the stuffing gap closed with a ladder stitch. (I keep adding little bits of stuffing as I sew Batty closed to make sure he is stuffed nice and firm!)

BOO! (GHOST)

BODY:

STEP 18

Trace the BODY PIECE onto a double layer of light fabric.

TIP: This is the sewing line so you must sew the body pieces together BEFORE you cut them out.

STEP 19

Sew around the BODY PIECES, on the sewing line and leaving the gap open for turning and stuffing. Clip the seams well especially the curved bits of the top, tail and wings, so that they turn nicely.

ASSEMBLY:

STEP 20

Turn your Ghost right sides out and use a wooden chopstick to turn out the top, tail and wings so the seams are turned really well (especially if you are using a non-stretchy fabric). Stuff the top, tail and wings first using small bits of toy stuffing. Then stuff the rest of the body.

Do not over stuff Boo – he should be firm but flat!

FACE:

STEP 21

Cut of the EYE PIECES and MOUTH PIECE from black felt. Pin the EYES and MOUTH PIECE on one side of BOO’s body and when you are happy with their position, sew or glue them in place.

STEP 22

Sew the stuffing gap closed with a ladder stitch.

Your Halloween toys are ready to LOVE!
