Kiki Koala is one of my older toy sewing patterns but she is still one of the more popular patterns. Of course Australians LOVE koalas but I think the world has become more aware of how endangered koalas are because of the terrible bushfires we have had lately! I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my koala sewing pattern<\/strong> can SEE how to sew a koala toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Kiki Koala Sewing Pattern)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let’s get started!<\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 1
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Choose some fabric for your koala toy! This is the fun part! Look how great Kiki Koala looks in ALL SORTS of colours and fabrics! \ud83d\ude42<\/strong> Kiki can be sewn in most fabrics. I sewed her out of quilting cottons but stretch fabrics like fleece or cuddle would be nice and snuggly!<\/p>\n

EARS:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Place the fabric for the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, right sides together, and sew along the sewing line <\/strong>you traced, for both ears.<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 3a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the ears out with a 3mm(\u215binch) seam allowance. Clip the seams and turn the ears right side out.<\/p>\n

STEP 3b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the ears along the fold line as shown on the pattern piece. Sew the fold closed about 5mm\/\u00bcinch from the fold.<\/p>\n

STEP 3c
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u2018OPEN\u2019 the ear fold and pin the fold of fabric flat. This is at the back<\/span> of the ear.<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>Here is a diagram to help you.<\/p>\n

SNOUT:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> as indicated on the pattern markings, with the fabric right sides together, and sew the darts closed. (There are 4 darts.)<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>I like to sew the darts 2 at a time.<\/p>\n

HEAD:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from A – B – A.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This is a hard seam to sew, take it slow and use LOTS of pins!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 6
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the FRONT HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> as indicated on the pattern markings, with the fabric right sides together, and sew the darts closed. (There are 2 darts.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the EARS<\/strong><\/span> in place on the FRONT HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and sew them in position with a 3mm(\u215binch) seam allowance.<\/p>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together, as indicated on the pattern markings. Sew from C \u2013 D.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> at the side seam, with the EARS<\/strong><\/span> in between. Sew from E – D – E.<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the snout at F so you can sew the SNOUT<\/strong><\/span>, FRONT HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> closed from F – A – E – G.<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>Now for a clever trick! With the head still inside out, sew the SNOUT BACKING PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, by hand, over the opening to the snout (very roughly \u2013 no need to be neat!)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I sew from the top, at B, down one side and then I sew down the other side, to keep things even.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Leave just a small opening an push toy stuffing into the snout area. This holds the stuffing inside the snout so you can make it nice and firm.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Stitch the opening closed when you have finished stuffing the snout really well. Turn the head right sides out and admire your koala!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

EYES:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 11
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are using CRAFT EYES<\/strong><\/span> insert them now. If you are using felt for the eyes do this when you add the mouth, after you have stuffed the head.<\/p>\n

TUMMY and CHEST:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the CHEST PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, matching the 3 dots of the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

LEGS:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 13a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the INNER LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, matching the single dot pattern markings.<\/p>\n

STEP 13b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the INNER FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the INNER LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, using the pattern markings to guide you….<\/p>\n

*** The purple pieces in the photo below are the <\/strong>INNER FOOT PIECES<\/span> –\u00a0 you can’t actually see the <\/strong>INNER LEG PIECES<\/span> in this photo so I have outlined them so you can picture where they are underneath the <\/strong>INNER FOOT PIECES<\/span>. <\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 14a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Match the double dots of the pattern markings on the OUTER LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 14b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the OUTER LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 15a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew along the top of one LEG from M, up the sides to K, sewing the INNER LEG & FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the OUTER LEG PIECE<\/strong><\/span>S and the TUMMY & CHEST PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

STEP 15b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Repeat for the other side.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

ARMS:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 16a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the ARM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, leaving them open at the top for stuffing.<\/p>\n

STEP 16b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the extra fabric off at the tip of each \u2018finger\u2019 and clip\/snip the seams between each of the \u2018fingers\u2019 so that they will turn more easily. Turn the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/p>\n

STEP 17
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> with toy stuffing leaving the top 2cm(about an inch) free of stuffing.<\/p>\n

*** THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT<\/span>:***<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nDo not stuff the ARMS too much <\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nor it will be hard to turn your toy!<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

STEP 18
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> to the CHEST<\/strong><\/span> and BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching point K and the star pattern markings on the CHEST PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and sew them in position with a 3mm(\u215binch) seam allowance.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>Check that the ‘fingers’ and facing the front! It’s easier to unpick NOW than once you have sewn the head in place!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

BACK:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from H- J, leaving the gap to turn and stuff your Koala.<\/p>\n

BASE SEAM:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the Koala closed at the base seam, matching points J and L. Sew from L – J – L, along the base of one LEG<\/strong><\/span>, across the base of the TUMMY<\/strong><\/span> and BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and sew along the back of the other LEG<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

FOOT PADS:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the FOOT PAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching point L and M.<\/p>\n

NECK SEAM:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 22
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the head to the body at the neck seam. Sew the neck seam from N – K – G – K – N. This is a hard seam to sew, use lots of pins and take it slow!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>I find the easiest way to do this, is to turn the head right sides out and position it \u2018inside the body cavity\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 23
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pull the head back out of the body and pin the Koala closed at the back. Sew the back closed from C (on the BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>) – N – H (on the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>).<\/p>\n

ASSEMBLY:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 24a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the Koala right sides out, pull the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> out first then the HEAD<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

*** IF you are finding it hard to pull the ARMS out ~> DON’T WORRY!
\nJust squeeze the ‘hands’ and pull them out gently.\ud83d\udc4d\ud83d\ude01<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 24b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the LEGS<\/strong><\/span> firmly with toy stuffing. Fill the head nice and firmly, then stuff the rest of the body with toy stuffing.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 25
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the stuffing gap on the koala\u2019s back closed with a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

FACE:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 26
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are making a toy for a child under the age of 3 years it is safer embroider eyes or to use felt for the eyes.<\/p>\n

\"Toy<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Use the templates to cut pieces of felt for the EYES<\/strong><\/span> and NOSE<\/strong><\/span>. Using the Face Sewing Diagrams as a guide<\/span>, sew or glue these in place.<\/p>\n
