I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Triceratops Sewing Pattern<\/strong> can SEE how to sew a Triceratops toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Tristan & Trixie Triceratops Sewing Pattern)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let’s start with the HORNS:<\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 1a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BIG HORN PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs to make 2 horns.<\/p>\n

STEP 1b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance at the \u2018tip\u2019 of the BIG HORN PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, then turn them right sides out.<\/p>\n

STEP 1c
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the BIG HORNS<\/strong><\/span> with toy stuffing and pin them closed at the straight edge.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 2a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the SMALL HORN PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together (1 horn). Trim the seams at the \u2018tip\u2019 of the SMALL HORN<\/strong><\/span>, then turn it right sides out.<\/p>\n

STEP 2b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I leave this step out for children under 3 years (for safety reasons). I have a post about toy safety<\/span> <\/strong><\/a>on my blog with more toy safety tips and guidelines.<\/p>\n

\"Toy<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fold a piece of wire\/chenille stick in half and push the folded end into the SMALL HORN<\/strong><\/span>. Trim the ends of the wire so they stick out of the horn by 12mm (\u00bd inch).<\/p>\n

STEP 2c<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the SMALL HORN<\/strong><\/span> with toy stuffing and pin it closed at the straight edge.<\/p>\n

NOSE, FACE & HORNS:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n
\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the NOSE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from A – B.<\/p>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin one of the BIG HORNS<\/strong><\/span> to one of the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, using the single dot pattern marking to guide you.<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BIG HORN<\/strong><\/span> in place with a 3mm(\u215binch) seam allowance to make sure it won\u2019t slip as you sew the head together. Lop-sided horns look a little funny!<\/p>\n

STEP 6a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, with the BIG HORN<\/strong><\/span> in between.<\/p>\n

STEP 6b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, from C – D, but do NOT sew to the edge<\/span> of the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> – stop at point D. (see diagram below)<\/p>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the SMALL HOR<\/strong>N<\/strong><\/span> to the same FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the other BIG HORN<\/strong><\/span> to the other FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, as before.<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 9a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and other FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> together, with the other BIG HORN<\/strong><\/span> in between from C – D. Continue pinning the FACE PIECES together, with the SMALL HORN<\/strong><\/span> in between from D – A and pin the NOSE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together between A and E. (Take your time and use LOTS of pins.)<\/p>\n

STEP 9b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FOREHEAD<\/strong><\/span>, FAC<\/strong><\/span>E and NOSE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from C – D – A – E (with the HORN<\/strong><\/span> in between).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Don\u2019t just sew normally over the wire\/chenille stick – it can snap your needle and damage your eyes! Turn the wheel to \u2018walk\u2019 your machine over the wires! Fold the ends of the wire to each side and sew them to the seams on each side of the SMALL HORN<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the BIG HORNS<\/strong><\/span> to the middle (towards the FOREHEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>) so that you can sew a line of stitches across the base of each BIG HORN<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This is very important because it makes the BIG<\/span> HORNS<\/strong> \u2018stand up\u2019 and stop them flopping to the sides.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 11
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with the fabric right sides together at the face darts and sew them closed.<\/p>\n

CHIN & NECK:<\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the CHIN PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the NECK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from B – F- B.<\/p>\n

STEP 13
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the CHIN & NECK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE & NOSE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from G- B – E – B – G.<\/p>\n

FRILL & EYES:<\/span><\/h1>\n
\n

STEP 14a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Choose ONE FRILL OPTION<\/span> for each Triceratops. Sew the FRILL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with right sides together.<\/p>\n

STEP 14b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams and snip off the points of the frill so that it will turn nicely. (Snips work really well for this!)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 15a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Use a turning tool (like a wooden chopstick) to make the tips of the FRILL<\/strong><\/span> nice and smooth. With the FRILL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out, pin the outside seam so that it lies flat.<\/p>\n

STEP 15b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stitch around the pointed edge of the FRILL<\/strong><\/span> using a 5mm\/\u00bcinch seam allowance.<\/p>\n

STEP 16a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FRILL<\/strong><\/span> to the FOREHEAD<\/strong><\/span> and FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 16b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FRILL<\/strong><\/span> to the FOREHEAD<\/strong><\/span> and FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with a 3mm(\u215binch) seam allowance.<\/p>\n

EYES:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 17

If you are using CRAFT EYES<\/strong><\/span>, insert them now.<\/p>\n

STEP 18

Sew the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from O – Q.<\/p>\n

STEP 19a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the BACK LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with the fabric right sides together and pin the leg darts closed at J.<\/p>\n

STEP 19b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the leg darts closed and clip the seams well so they turn smoothly.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the BACK LEGS<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from H – J- K, matching the single cross pattern marking.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I like to sew this seam with the BACK LEG PIECE<\/strong> down so I can ‘wiggle’ the BODY PIECE<\/strong> to smooth out any wrinkles as I sew!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, with the fabric right sides together, and sew the body darts closed at M.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 22
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FRONT LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, from L – M- N, matching the double crosses of the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

STEP 23
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from Q – T, leaving the gap open for stuffing. Do not sew them closed at the front between S and T. (This is to make it easier to sew the HEAD<\/strong> to the BODY<\/strong> later.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 24
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the INNER LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching the double dots of the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>Stop and check the front of ALL of the legs are forwards, it\u2019s very easy to sew the
\nLEGS<\/span><\/strong> back to front! (I know!)<\/p>\n

SIDE SEAMS:<\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 25
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Study the diagram below. This shows the 3 Steps for sewing the TUMMY & INNER LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY, BACK & FRONT LEG <\/strong><\/span>PIECES<\/strong><\/span> :<\/p>\n

STEP 26a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

I like to pin STEP 1<\/strong> and STEP 2<\/strong> at the same time – I think it holds the pieces together nicely and makes the seams easier to sew!<\/p>\n

STEP 26b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

STEP 1.<\/strong> Sew from U – L – G (up the front of the front legs, one at a time).<\/p>\n

In the photo below you can see I have sewn both sides.<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 27
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

STEP 2.<\/strong> Sew from X – K – Q (up the back of the back legs, one at a time).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 28
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

STEP 3.<\/strong> Sew the sides closed from V – N- H – W (between the front and back legs).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

SEW THE HEAD TO THE BODY<\/span><\/h1>\n
\n

STEP 29
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Join the head to the body next. Pin the NECK<\/strong>, FOREHEAD & FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY & BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with the FRILL<\/strong><\/span> in between. Sew the neck seam from S – G – O – G – S.<\/p>\n

TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>I find the best way to do this is to place the head \u2018inside\u2019 the body so it is facing back into the body.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 30
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pull the head back out of the body. Sew the NECK<\/strong><\/span> and TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> closed (under the chin) from R – S – T.<\/p>\n

FOOT PADS<\/span><\/h1>\n
\n

STEP 31
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FOOT PADS<\/strong><\/span> in place. Use lots of pins to prevent wrinkles! Clip the seams well.<\/p>\n

ASSEMBLY<\/span><\/h1>\n
\n

STEP 32
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn your triceratops right sides out and use a turning tool to make sure the pointy bits like the tail and horn are nicely turned. Stuff the head, tail and legs firmly with toy stuffing. Fill the neck and the rest of the body nice and firmly with stuffing. If you are embroidering the EYES , sew these now.<\/p>\n

TIP:\u00a0<\/strong>I like to use a safety pin to pin the tips of the BIG HORNS<\/strong><\/span> together – this helps to keep the HORNS<\/strong><\/span> even as I stuff the toy. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

STEP 33
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Use a ladder stitch to close the opening on the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n
