OK, let’s get started!<\/span><\/h1>\n

Choose some fabric for your Otter:<\/h2>\n

You don’t have to make your otter toy in natural browns and creams if you want something a bit brighter. Look at how cool he turned out made in Otter sewn in Tula Pink Spirit Animal Otter and Chill – Sunkiss<\/strong>!!!!<\/p>\n

HEAD:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 1<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FOREHEAD<\/strong><\/span> from A – B.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 2
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, fabric right sides together, to sew the top darts closed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I find the Otter’s\u00a0 SNOUT<\/strong><\/span> looks better if you fold the seam allowance, at each dart, towards the middle and pin them in this position.<\/p>\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FOREHEAD & CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from C – D – C.<\/p>\n

STEP 4

Fold the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, with the fabric right sides together again, and sew the dart closed at F.<\/p>\n

STEP 5

If you are using craft eyes, attach them now.<\/p>\n

Sew the CHIN PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the SNOUT & CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from E – C- F – C – E.<\/p>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the CHIN PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, with the fabric right sides together, and sew the dart closed at G.<\/p>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, right sides together again, and sew the darts closed.<\/p>\n

EARS:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, leaving the flat edge open for turning. Trim the seams of the EARS<\/strong><\/span> to about 3mm(\u215binch) around the sewing line.<\/p>\n

STEP 10a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the EARS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I use a chopstick to push the seams out nicely. Run the end of the chopstick along the seam from inside the EARS<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 10b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the EARS<\/strong><\/span> with a little bit of toy stuffing and pin them to the CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> using the pattern markings to guide you.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Sew the EARS<\/strong><\/span> to the CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> using a very small seam allowance of 3mm(\u215binch). Tack(baste) them in place by hand. This will stop them from slipping – crooked ears aren\u2019t always as cute as you\u2019d think!<\/p>\n

FLIPPERS:<\/h2>\n

STEP 11a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FLIPPER PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs and sew along the front seam leaving the gap open for stuffing the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> (you do this after you stuff the Otter).<\/p>\n

STEP 11b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FLIPPER PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together along the back seam.<\/p>\n

Pin the FLIPPER PADS<\/strong><\/span> to the FLIPPER PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching X and Z. (sew right around without a gap.)<\/p>\n

Clip the seams well and turn the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/p>\n

Pin the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> closed at the top so that the seams line up at the middle.<\/p>\n

Pin the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, using the pattern markings to guide you…<\/p>\n

…and sew them in place with a 3mm(\u215binch) seam allowance.<\/p>\n

STEP 15

Pin and sew TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> in between.<\/p>\n

STEP 16
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> back towards the \u2018tail\u2019 and pin them to the TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span>. Sew across the tops of the FLIPPERS on the outside\/right side of the fabric, 5mm(\u00bcinch) back from the seam you just sewed, sewing through all layers of the FLIPPERS and the TAIL PIECES.\u00a0 (This will make the FLIPPERS extra secure which is great if you are making the toy for a small child! It also helps to make the FLIPPERS \u2018lie
\nback\u2019 and stop them flopping forwards).<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>I used white thread so you can see where I sewed BUT it is best to use a matching coloured thread for this!<\/p>\n

ARMS:<\/h2>\n

STEP 17a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HAND PIECES<\/span><\/strong> to the ARM PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching the dot pattern marking.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HAND & ARM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, leaving the straight edge open for stuffing.<\/p>\n

STEP 18a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance of the HANDS & ARMS<\/strong><\/span> to about 3mm(\u215binch) and turn them right sides out.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Use a turning tool\/chopstick again to push the seams out nicely. Run the end of the chopstick along the seam from inside the HANDS & ARMS<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 18b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the HANDS & ARMS<\/strong><\/span>, leaving the last 2\u00bdcm(1inch) unstuffed, and pin the straight edge closed.<\/p>\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> using the dot pattern markings to guide you with their position.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Sew (tack\/baste) the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> using a very small seam allowance of 3mm(\u215binch).<\/p>\n

BODY TUMMY, ARMS & LEGS:<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FRONT BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BACK BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, along the waist seam, matching the 3 dots of the pattern markings, to make sure you sew these pieces right sides up!<\/p>\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together along the back seam, from N at the back of the BACK BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 to P on the\u00a0 FRONT BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, leaving the stuffing gap open.<\/p>\n

STEP 22a<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TUMMY & TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT & BACK BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> along the side seam from E – N – E (with the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> in between) and the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> ‘inside’ (between) the otter’s body.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This can be a hard seam to pin so use LOTS<\/strong> of pins to make sure the pieces don\u2019t slip when you sew. If it\u2019s easier for you – do one side at a time!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 22b<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Now sew the TUMMY & TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and the FRONT & BACK BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from E – N – E. (Check that you have caught the ARMS in the seams and unpick and fix this NOW<\/strong><\/em> if you didn\u2019t.)<\/p>\n

SEW THE HEAD TO THE BODY<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 23a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the CHIN, CHEEKS & FOREHEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY & FRONT BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the neck seam (with the EARS<\/strong><\/span> in between).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Turn the head right sides out and position it \u2018inside the body<\/strong>\u2019 so you can pin the pieces together at the neck seam, with the fabric right sides together.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 23b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Now sew the CHIN, CHEEKS & FOREHEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY & FRONT BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the neck seam, sew from M – A – E – G – E – A – M.<\/p>\n

STEP 24
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pull the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> back out of the body so the pieces are wrong sides out again<\/strong>. Pin the Otter closed at the back and sew the back seam closed from P (on the FRONT BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>) to M – Q (on the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span>).<\/p>\n

ASSEMBLY:<\/h2>\n

STEP 25
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the Otter right sides out through the turning gap on the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and use a chopstick again to make sure all the seams are turned nicely.<\/p>\n

STEP 26
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the snout area really well. Stuff the rest of the head and neck firmly too then stuff the tail and the tummy. Stuff the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> last.<\/p>\n

*IMPORTANT TIP:
\nKeep on stuffing until the Otter’s face is <\/strong><\/p>\n

very firm and round!!!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Use safety pins the pin the EARS<\/strong><\/span> forward as you stuff the otter. This will help them to stick out and not lie back flat. I also use a safety pin to hold the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> together when I stuff the BODY<\/strong><\/span>!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 27
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the turning gap on the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> closed with a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

FACE:<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 28
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are embroidering the eyes, sew them now. Cut the MOUTH PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from felt and pin them in position. Sew the FELT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in place with embroidery thread and a blanket stitch.<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 29
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Join the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the MOUTH PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with a long straight stitch. Using the Whiskers Diagram<\/strong> to guide you, sew 3 straight stitches on each side of the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> for whiskers.<\/p>\n

*The top whisker covers the stitch line of the dart.<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 30
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trace the CLAM PIECE<\/strong><\/span> onto a double layer of fabric (right sides together). Sew on the sewing line you traced, leaving the straight edge open for turning. Cut the CLAM<\/strong><\/span> out with a 3mm (\u215binch) seam allowance and clip the seams where the are very curved so the CLAM<\/strong><\/span> will turn out nicely.<\/p>\n

STEP 31a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the CLAM<\/strong><\/span> and use a wooden chopstick to push the seams out well. Pin the edge of the CLAM<\/strong><\/span> nice and flat, then sew around the edge, using a 3mm(\u00bcinch) seam allowance to create a nice flattened seam around them. Stuff the CLAM<\/strong><\/span> with a little bit of toy stuffing, tuck the seam in at the opening and sew the CLAM<\/strong><\/span> closed again with with a 3mm (\u215binch) seam allowance.<\/p>\n

STEP 31b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Using the pattern markings to guide you, top-stitch the radial lines on the CLAM<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

* I have highlighted the radial top-stitch lines in yellow in the photo below.<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 32
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the otter\u2019s HANDS<\/strong><\/span> together with strong thread and sew the CLAM<\/strong><\/span> to both HANDS<\/strong><\/span> so he is holding it nice and securely.<\/p>\n
