This quirky creature is a quick and easy sewing pattern to sew. He looks awesome in any colour and makes a great present for those hard-to-buy-for people. Everyone needs their own Narwhal right?!<\/span><\/p>\n

(I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Nate the Narwhal Sewing Pattern<\/strong>)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let’s get started!<\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 1
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Choose some fabric for your narwhal…<\/p>\n

BODY and TUSKS:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 2a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TUSK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

STEP 2b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams really well at the \u2018base\u2019 of the TUSK PIECE<\/strong>S<\/strong><\/span>. (This is really important if you are using woven\/non-stretchy fabrics to help the TUSK<\/strong><\/span> to turn nice and smoothly)<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 3a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from C at the front, around the TUSK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and along the top to D.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

STEP 3b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance to about 3mm (\u215b inch) at the \u2018tip\u2019 of the TUSK<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the TUSK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I like to use a wooden chopstick to help turn the seams. Run the end of the stick back and forth along the stitching inside until the seam is nice and smooth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff some toy stuffing into the TUSK<\/strong><\/span> now. It is really hard to stuff the \u2018tip\u2019 of the TUSK<\/strong> once the narwhal is all sewn up so do this now!<\/p>\n

EYES:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 6
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are using craft eyes insert them now.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

CHEST and TUMMY:<\/h2>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the CHEST PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, leaving the gap open for turning. (The yellow arrow in the photo below is poiting to the turning gap!)<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the CHEST PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with the fabric right sides together and sew the front dart closed. Clip the seam allowance at the dart.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

TAIL:<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew one of the\u00a0TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIEC<\/strong>E<\/span>, matching point D.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the other TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching point D.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

FLIPPERS:<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 11
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FLIPPER PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, leaving the straight edge open<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance to 3mm (\u215b inch) around the \u2018tip\u2019 of each FLIPPER<\/strong><\/span> and turn them right sides out.<\/p>\n

STEP 13a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

DON\u2019T STUFF the FLIPPERS<\/span> NOW!<\/strong> First pin the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> around the curved edge so that the seam lies flat.<\/p>\n

STEP 13b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew around the curved edge, using a 5mm (\u00bcinch) seam allowance, to create a flat seam around the Sew around the curved edge, using a 5mm (\u00bcinch) seam allowance, to create a flat
\nseam around the FLIPPE<\/strong>R<\/strong><\/span>. (This gives the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> a nice flat shape when they are stuffed!)
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> with a little bit of toy stuffing so they are not too fat. Use pins to hold the toy-stuffing in place.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 15
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, using the dot pattern markings to guide you.<\/p>\n

SEWING THE SIDE SEAM:<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 17
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the BODY & TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the CHEST, TUMMY & TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, with the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> in between.<\/p>\n

Start by pinning the PIECES together at the front at C and at the back at H. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pin the PIECES together at the sides at A and B. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pin all around the sides.<\/strong><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Take your time and use LOTS of pins so the pieces won\u2019t slip as you sew.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 18
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the Narwhal together along the side. Sew right around from C, around the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, and back to C again.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance around ‘tips’ of the TAIL<\/strong> to about 3mm (\u215b inch) and clip the seams well, especially where it is very curved at E\/F.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

* Please note: <\/strong>There will be ONE MORE line of stitching for you to do on the tail AFTER it\u2019s turned right sides out. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This gives the tail a nice shape ~> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

so don\u2019t forget to sew it!<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

ASSEMBLY:<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the Narwhal right sides out through the turning gap.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Do not stuff your narwhal now.<\/strong> First pin the edge of the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> so that the seam lies flat, then sew a line of stitching around the edge of the tail using a 5mm (\u00bcinch) seam allowance to create a flat seam around the tail.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This is the same way you did the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span>, BUT I have drawn this thick dashed line on the TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> pattern markings to show you where to start and end this extra stitching line.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 22
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff your Narwhal with toy stuffing. Stuff the rest of the TUSK<\/strong> very firmly. This is very important for creating the spirals when you wind the embroidery thread around the TUSK<\/strong>. Stuff the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Stuff the head area and then the rest of the BODY<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I use a childern\u2019s paint brush to reach the TAIL<\/strong><\/span>!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 23
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the stuffing gap closed using a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

TUSK:<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 24a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

** If you are embroidering the EYES<\/span> you can sew them now.**<\/strong><\/p>\n

Secure the end of the embroidery thread, at the base of the TUSK<\/strong><\/span>, with a double knot.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I sew ‘into’ the narwhal at one of the seams and come out at the base of the TUSK<\/strong><\/span> (see the purple arrow in the photo below). I leave this tail hanging out and cut it off once I have finished the spiral.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 24b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Wind the thread in a spiral around the TUSK<\/strong><\/span> pulling firmly as you go to indent the TUSK<\/strong><\/span> material. Sew a knot at the tip of the TUSK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

STEP 24c
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the thread back inside the TUSK<\/strong><\/span> to finish off.<\/p>\n
