Belinda Butterfly is a fun toy pattern for using up scraps of fabrics from other projects. She is a bit fiddly so I recommend her for more experienced toy makers.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Butterfly Sewing Pattern<\/strong> can SEE how to sew a butterfly toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Belinda Butterfly Toy Sewing Pattern<\/strong>)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Let’s get started!<\/span><\/p>\n

PREPARE THE MAIN FABRICS<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 1a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the 2 rectangles of MAIN FABRIC together along the longest side. (Look at the Layout diagram!). Line up the dashed line of the TUMMY<\/strong><\/span> and BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with this seam to cut them out.<\/p>\n

STEP 1b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Go back and secure the seams at the edges of the TUMMY<\/strong><\/span> and BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> by sewing back and forth a few stitches at each end of the seam. This is very important<\/span> so the seams don’t start to come undone as you put the butterfly together!<\/p>\n

FEELERS<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FEELER PIECE<\/strong>S<\/span> together. (Remember the line you traced is the sewing line!)<\/p>\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut around the sewing line with a 3mm\/\u215b inch seam allowance. Clip the seam allowance, especially where it is very curved then turn the FEELER PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/p>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Use a turning tool like a wooden chopstick to turn out the seams nicely and pin them closed at the open edge.<\/p>\n

ARMS<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 5a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the ARM PIECE<\/strong>S<\/span> together. (Remember the line you traced is the sewing line!) Cut around the sewing line with a 3mm\/\u215b inch seam allowance. Turn the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out. Use the chopstick again to turn out the seams nicely.<\/p>\n

STEP 5b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> with toy stuffing, leaving the top 25mm (1 inch) unstuffed and pin the open edges closed.<\/p>\n

STEP 6a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you haven’t transferred the face pattern markings onto the right side<\/span> (front) of the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> , do this now.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> For pale fabric – you should be able to see the face pattern markings through the fabric so you can trace them onto the right side of the\u00a0 FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>. For darker fabric – make 2 holes where the eye positions are, and cut out a piece of the template above the mouth, so you can draw the face markings (through the template) onto the right side of the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 6b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the fabric right sides together and sew the darts in the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>. There are 5 darts – sew them ALL now.<\/p>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FEELERS<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> using the pattern markings to guide you.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Make sure the tip of each FEELER<\/strong><\/span> is ‘pointing’ OUT to the side.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 8a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from A – H. (Leave them open between H and B!)<\/p>\n

Fold the fabric right sides together and sew the darts in the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with the FEELERS<\/strong><\/span> in between. Sew from D – A – D.<\/p>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams well and turn the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> right sides out. If you are using craft eyes, insert them now.<\/p>\n

STEP 11
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold each of the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the wing dart (fabric right sides together) and sew the from X – Y. (Leave them open between Y and Z!)<\/p>\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together at the bottom, along the back seam from M – K.<\/p>\n

(The red arrow shows you where to leave them OPEN
\n<\/span>– between B and M!<\/span><\/strong>)<\/p>\n

STEP 13
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the fabric right sides together and sew the dart in the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> at K.<\/p>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> along the sides seams from D – K – D on the other side.<\/p>\n

STEP 15
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> matching point D and with the \u2018thumbs\u2019 to the middle. (The centre of the open edge of the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> should line up with the side seams at point D.)<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Push the ARMS into the BODY hands-first!<\/p>\n

STEP 16
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FACE & HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY & BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and sew them together from B – X – D – C – D – X – B. (Along the neck seam!)<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I find the best way to do this is to turn the HEAD & FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out and push them \u2018inside the body\u2019 so you can pin the pieces together at the neck seam, with the fabric right sides together.<\/p>\n

STEP 17
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pull the FACE & HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> back out of the body so the PIECES<\/strong> <\/span>are wrong sides out again.<\/p>\n

WINGS<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 18
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut 2 pieces from the wing fabric 30 x 40 cm wide (12x16inches wide) and cut another piece the same size from batting.\u00a0 Trace the WING PIECE<\/strong><\/span> onto the wrong side of one of the fabric pieces. (This is
\nthe sewing line.) Pin the WING<\/strong><\/span> fabric with right sides facing on top of the piece of batting and sew through all 3 layers, on the sewing line you traced.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the 3 layers, leaving 5mm (\u00bc inch) outside the sewing line, and…<\/p>\n

Clip the seam well to help the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> turn nicely.<\/p>\n

Turn the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out through the turning gap.<\/p>\n

STEP 20a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> around the edges so they are nice and flat.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Mark where to sew the topstitch lines on the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> with a fabric pen, or tailor\u2019s chalk, using the pattern markings to guide you. Cut the round shapes out of the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> to make it easy to transfer the pattern markings for the top-stitching to the WINGS<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 20c
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Connect the round shapes you traced to create the sewing line for the top-stitching on the WINGS<\/strong><\/span>. Sew the topstitch lines with a slightly longer than normal stitch as you are sewing through a lot of layers! (You can sew this by hand.)<\/p>\n

ATTACH THE WINGS<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the straight edge (open edge) of one WING<\/strong><\/span> \u2018inside\u2019 the wing dart, matching Y and Z. (This is a difficult seam to pin so take it slow and use lots of pins so the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> won\u2019t slip as you sew them.) I like to fold the top and bottom of the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> to the middle and use a safety pin to hold them together.\"Abutterfly-3-(29bbbbbbb)\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Trim the edges of the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> so they are neat and straight BEFORE you insert them into the wing darts!<\/p>\n

STEP 22
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the WING in place from Y – Z.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Make sure you have caught ALL the layers in the seam now. It\u2019s easier to unpick and sew them again now rather than after the butterfly is all sewn! Secure the WING<\/strong><\/span> with a zig zag stitch for extra strength.

STEP 23
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Push the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> up into the head to make more space and then sew the second WING<\/strong><\/span> in place like you did with the first.<\/p>\n

STEP 24
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Remove the safety pins and roll up the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> as small as you can. With the arms still tucked inside the head, pin the butterfly closed between H and B on the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and between G and M on the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. This is also a very hard seam to sew. When you sew this seam – use lots of pins or baste together first.<\/p>\n

STEP 25
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Gently turn the butterfly right sides out through the gap left on the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Stuff the head and body very firmly. I like to use a children’s paintbrush to push the toy stuffing in nice and firmly.<\/p>\n

STEP 27a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Embroider a mouth with back stitch thread, hide the knots under the CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. If the toy is for a young child use embroidery thread and satin stitches to sew the eyes instead of craft eyes.<\/p>\n

Cut the CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from felt. Pin them in position and sew them in place by hand.<\/p>\n
