I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased the pattern can SEE how to sew this stuffed toy Cat! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Patch Pussy Cat sewing pattern!)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I designed this cute patchwork pussy cat because Tula Pink<\/a> asked me to<\/strong>! It\u2019s true! She wanted to make some cats for her booth at Quilt Market… and since I love cats and Tula Pink\u2019s fabrics… I said, \u2018SURE!\u2019 \ud83d\ude0d Patch is sewn with a simple straight stitch but this pattern has LOTS of pieces so she is NOT one of my easy patterns<\/strong><\/a> – she just takes a little bit longer to make and she’s so cute it’s definitely worth the extra time! \ud83d\ude01<\/span><\/p>\n

OK, first choose some cat fabric!<\/span><\/p>\n

I sewed Patch PUSSY CAT<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/span> from quilting cottons for this photo tutorial…<\/p>\n

BUT a patchwork toy will look good in any fabric. Have fun mixing prints\/patterns and colours!<\/p>\n

EARS & FACE:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 1
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, leaving the straight edge open. Trim the seam allowance to 3mm (1\/8 inch) at the tips, turn the EARS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out and pin them closed along the straight edge.<\/p>\n

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from A – B.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Clip these very curved seams really well so the seam will lie nice and flat and the pieces will turn nice and smoothly.<\/p>\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from C – D.\u00a0(See where the pins are in the photo below)<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the EARS<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, using the dot pattern markings to guide you.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> The fabric you want as the ‘inner ears’ must be pinned facing(touching) the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

NOSE & FOREHEAD<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from I – J.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This seam is right in the middle of your kitty’s face and you want it to be nice and smooth so use LOTS of pins –<\/p>\n

…and clip the seam allowance well so\u00a0 it lies perfectly smooth and flat without any wrinkles!!!<\/p>\n

STEP 6a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the NOSE & FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE & CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, with the EARS<\/strong><\/span> in between them at E. (Use lots of pins to prevent wrinkles!) Here you can see me pinning one side first…<\/p>\n

STEP 6b

Sew the NOSE & FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE & CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, sew from E – C – E on the other side.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I like to sew this seam with the NOSE & FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> down so that you can ‘finger-press’ the pieces to smooth out any puckers as you go so you don’t get any wrinkles!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the EARS<\/strong><\/span> to the sides, so the straight edge of each EAR<\/strong><\/span> lines up with the side seam edge of the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and pin them in this position.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I like to baste (tack) the EARS in this position so the pins don\u2019t prick me when I sew the rest of the cat\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

STEP 8a

Pin the CHIN PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE & CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> on one side, matching M, B and H.<\/p>\n

Sew the CHIN PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE & CHEEK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> on this side, stopping at the spot before the edge of the fabric at H.<\/p>\n

If you are using craft eyes insert them now. (You don\u2019t have to use cat\u2019s eyes, in fact, I liked my kitty better with plain black eyes!)<\/p>\n

STEP 12

Sew the BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together along the middle seam, leaving the bottom open, as shown by the pattern markings. Finger press this seam open so it lies nice and flat.<\/p>\n

STEP 13

Pin and sew the BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FOREHEAD & FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Sew from G – E – F – E – G on the other side.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Sew this seam with the BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> downwards so you can finger-press the seams open to flatten them as you sew.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

CHEST, TUMMY & LEGS:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together, along the middle seam, leaving the gap open for turning and stuffing.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Double check you have matched point M, or your cat\u2019s tail will be sewn on the wrong way round!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the cat\u2019s body together along the top from W on the BACK BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, around the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, to V on the FRONT BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.(Don\u2019t sew to N!)<\/p>\n

STEP 21a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance to about 3mm around the tip of the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> so the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> with turn nicely.<\/p>\n

STEP 21b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Push the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> right sides out by pushing it back ‘inside’ the BACK BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. (It\u2019s easier to do this now than when the toy is all sewn up!)<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Use a chopstick to make site the tip of the tail is turned smoothly. Run the chopstick back and forth along the stitching line, inside the TAIL<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

SEW THE BODY TOGETHER:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 22

You will pin and sew the CHEST, TUMMY & INNER LEGS<\/strong><\/span> to the TAIL, BACK & FRONT BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in 3 steps:<\/p>\n

Step ONE:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Sew the cat together at the back. Sew the BACK BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY & INNER BACK LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching points W and T.<\/p>\n

Pin and sew the FACE & CHIN<\/strong><\/span> and BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the CHEST & FRONT BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the neck seam.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I find the best way to do this is to turn the head right sides out and position it \u2018inside the body\u2019<\/strong> so you can pin the pieces together at the neck seam, with the fabric right sides together.<\/p>\n

Pull the head back out of the body and pin and sew the cat closed along the top of the FRONT BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and the middle seam of the BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Stuff the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> first using small pieces of toy stuffing so it is firmly packed and will stand up nice and straight. Stuff the HEAD really well especially the CHEEK area. Stuff the neck, then the legs, and finally the tummy area last.<\/p>\n

STEP 28
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from felt and pin this in position. Sew the NOSE<\/strong><\/span> in place with embroidery thread and a blanket stitch. If you are embroidering the eyes, sew them now.\u00a0 (You can sew some long stitches for your cat\u2019s whiskers… but I think it looks cute enough without!)<\/p>\n

Use a ladder stitch to close the opening on the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n
