Sew your own dachshund stuffed toy – everyone loves a Dachshund!<\/p>\n

I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Dachshund Sewing Pattern<\/strong> can SEE how to sew a dachshund toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Digger & Dixie Dachshund Sewing Pattern<\/strong>)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

First choose some dachshund fabric:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 1
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

A dachshund toy will look great in any fabric… and ANY COLOUR!<\/p>\n

it’s quite fun to use dachshund fabric for your dogs if you can find it!<\/p>\n

EARS:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 2a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs.<\/p>\n

STEP 2b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the EARS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out and pin them closed at the straight edge.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I use a chopstick to push the seams out nicely.\u00a0 Run the end of the chopstick along the seam from inside the EARS<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

TAIL:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 3a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Use the LONG TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> if you want your Dachshund to have a long tail which hangs downwards. Use the SHORT TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> if you want your doggy to have a short \u2018puppy\u2019 tail that sticks straight up.<\/p>\n

Sew the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together. If you are sewing a LONG TAIL<\/strong><\/span> remember to leave the turning gap so it is easier to turn and stuff.<\/p>\n

STEP 3b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance at the tip, then turn the TAIL right sides out!<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> The SHORT TAIL<\/strong><\/span> is a small and skinny and can be hard to turn. I have a blog post to show you how to turn small softie pieces<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 3c
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are making a SHORT TAIL<\/strong><\/span> stuff it with toy stuffing now. Pin the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> closed at the straight edge.<\/p>\n

HEAD:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together at the front from A-B.<\/p>\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the EARS<\/strong><\/span> in place on the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, using the pattern markings to guide you.<\/p>\n

STEP 6
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching A and C, with the EARS<\/strong><\/span> sandwiched in between. This is an important seam so take your time and use lots of pins.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Use safety pins to pin the EARS out of the way as you sew. (You can see the safety pin the in the middle photo above).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Sew a zig-zag along this seam allowance where the EARS<\/strong><\/span> are to give the seam extra strength if the toy is for a young child that will tug on their doggy\u2019s ears!<\/p>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams well, especially around the nose area, then turn the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> using the pattern markings to guide you and sew the neck darts closed, 2 on each side makes 4 darts.<\/p>\n

STEP 10

If you are using CRAFT EYES<\/strong><\/span> or BUTTONS<\/strong><\/span>, attach them now.<\/p>\n

STEP 11
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

* For ALL of the LEG PIECES, make sure that the \u2018toes\u2019 are pinned facing the front.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sew the OUTER FRONT LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching the single dot pattern markings.<\/p>\n

Sew the OUTER BACK LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching the double dots pattern marking.<\/p>\n

STEP 13a

Fold the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and sew the neck darts<\/strong> closed, 1 dart on each BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> makes 2 darts!<\/p>\n

STEP 13b

Fold the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> again, and sew the body darts<\/strong> closed, 1 dart on each BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> makes 2 darts!<\/p>\n

* I forgot to take a photo of me sewing this dart but the red arrow, in the photo below, is pointing to the body dart and the dotted line shows you where to fold the BODY PIECE.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pin the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> in position on one of the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Pin and sew the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together along the top seam, from E – G with the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> sandwiched in between. Zig-zag acros the seam like you did with the EARS.<\/p>\n

Sew the CHEST PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, leaving the gap open for turning<\/p>\n

Pin the INNER BACK LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the OUTER BACK LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the back seam, matching point M. Sew the back seams from M – G on both sides.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Pin the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the CHEST & TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the side seam. Pin the INNER and OUTER LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together matching points N and O. Sew the side seams from N – O on both sides.<\/p>\n

Pin the FOOT PADS<\/strong><\/span> to the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and sew them in place.<\/p>\n

SEW THE HEAD TO THE BODY:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the GUSSET & HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the CHEST & BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the neck. Use lots of pins to hold all the pieces in place as you sew.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I find the best way to do this is to turn the head right sides out and position it \u2018inside the body\u2019 – see the black arrow in the photo below.<\/p>\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pull the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> back out of the BODY<\/strong><\/span> so the pieces are wrong sides out again. Pin the Dachshund closed at the back of the neck and sew this closed from P (on the GUSSET PIECE) – D – E (on the BODY PIECES).<\/p>\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the Dachshund right sides out through the turning gap.<\/p>\n

Stuff the nose area then the head and neck really well. Stuff the chest, front legs, back legs and \u2018rump\u2019 area next. Finally stuff the tummy area last. Make sure the nose and face are stuffed really firmly so that it makes it easy to <\/strong>sew the NOSE on.<\/strong><\/p>\n

***If you used the LONG TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, stuff them with toy stuffing now.***<\/p>\n

Cut the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from felt and pin this in position. Sew the NOSE in place with embroidery thread and a blanket stitch.<\/p>\n

Cut a 30cm (12inch) piece of ribbon<\/strong><\/span>. Wrap the ribbon<\/strong><\/span> around your doggy\u2019s neck and hand sew or glue it in position.<\/p>\n
