I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased the pattern can SEE how to sew a toy eagle! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Bald Eagle toy sewing pattern!)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

First choose some fabric to sew a Bald Eagle! <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve had this star fabric for a while… waiting for the perfect American toy pattern design… so when Bill the Bald Eagle<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span> came along, I teamed it up with some red and white striped fabric and a feathery looking brown fabric which had EAGLE written all over it!<\/p>\n

* If you don’t have stars and stripes<\/h1>\n

DON’T WORRY<\/h1>\n

~> you can use plain blue and plain red for the wings – or even make a ‘natural-looking eagle with brown wings.<\/p>\n

<\/h1>\n

We start with the WINGS!<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 1<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the WING TIP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching the crosses of the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

\"1.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I like to finger-press these seams open with a fingernail so they lie nice and flat for the next step.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the WING TIP & WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, with right sides facing, on a rectangle of batting. Sew through all 3 layers and remember to leave the straight edge open for turning.<\/p>\n

\"Bald<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the batting and the seam allowance to approximately 3mm (1\/8inch) and turn the wings right sides out. (It is optional to use batting – I like it because it makes the wings less floppy!)<\/p>\n

***Do not stuff the wings!***<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\"Trim<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 4<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the wings so that the edges are flat then sew the top stitching lines, as shown in the Wing Sewing Diagram<\/strong>. Sew around the edge of each wing using a 5mm\/\u00bcinch seam allowance to create a \u2018rim\u2019 around the outsides and stitch across the wings at the seam between the WING TIP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. This is important because it holds all 3 layers together and gives the wings a nice professional finish!<\/p>\n

\"Bald<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I stitch in blue thread on the WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and in white on the WING TIP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to help \u2018hide\u2019 my stitching!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 5<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the wings in position on the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> using the pattern markings to guide you.<\/p>\n

STEP 6<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold and pin the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the wing dart and sew the WING<\/strong><\/span>S in place (inside the dart!).<\/p>\n

HEAD & BODY:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 7<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together at the neck seam, making sure the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> are out of the way and don\u2019t get caught up in the seam!
\n\"\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 8<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together. Pin the seams you have just sewn so that they lie downwards and top stitch a line of stitching over the seam so that they are nice and firm.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Make sure you stitches go through the seam at the back! This is important because it makes the seam nice and firm. I like to use a thread to match the body fabric.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 9<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the eagle\u2019s body together down the back, from C on the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 E on the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Clip the seams, especially the curved part around the top of the eagle\u2019s head.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> If you want to be extra fussy (like me?) you can sew the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> with white thread and change to brown for the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>\u2026 or keep it simple and use white thread for everything!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

BEAK:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 10<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BEAK TOP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BEAK BASE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Sew from A \u2013 B, matching the 3 crosses (xxx) of the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 11<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the BEAK & BEAK BASE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together and sew them together from C \u2013 D, making sure to leave the seam open from D \u2013 F. (See the Beak sewing diagram<\/strong>.) This is important so that it will be easier to sew the beak to the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 12<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam, especially at the tip, so it will turn nicely and turn the beak right sides out. Use a wooden chopstick to turn the seams nicely. Run it, back and forth, along the stitch line inside the beak to make the seams smooth.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> If you don\u2019t have a chopstick, the end of a children\u2019s paintbrush works really great for this too!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 13<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the BEAK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching point C and F. Sew from F \u2013 C \u2013 F on the other side.<\/p>\n

EYES: <\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 14<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are using craft\/safety eyes fit them now. If you want to embroider eyes, I recommend doing them after the toy is stuffed.<\/p>\n

TAIL:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 15<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together, with right sides facing, on a rectangle of batting, like you did with the wings. Leave the straight edge open for turning. Trim the seams and turn the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out and use a chopstick to turn the seam smoothly.<\/p>\n

*** Do not stuff the tail!***<\/strong><\/h1>\n

STEP 16<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TAIL<\/span><\/strong> so that the edges are flat and sew around the edge using a 5mm\/\u00bcinch seam allowance. Using the Tail sewing diagram to guide you, sew the top stitching lines on the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 17<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching point M and E.<\/p>\n

LEGS:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 18<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs. Sew from G \u2013 H and J \u2013 K. (N.B.* DON\u2019T FORGET to leave a gap for stuffing them later!<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

STEP 19<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TOES PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the HEEL PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 20<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew them to the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching points H and K. (Sew right around without a gap.)<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 21<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams then turn the feet right sides out. Use a wooden chopstick to make sure the seams are turned nicely, especially the \u2018toes\u2019. Pin the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> closed at the top and then…

STEP 22<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

…pin them to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching points J and G, so the \u2018toes\u2019 face to the front (where the beak is!).<\/p>\n

BACK TO THE BODY:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 23<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the GUSSET PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with the legs sandwiched in between, matching the dots of the pattern markings. I found I had to use a LOT of pins to keep the pieces together for sewing this seam \u2013 I think it\u2019s because Bill has such big feet!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 24<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew across the top of the legs a few times.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I also like to sew across the top of the legs with a zig-zag stitch to make them even more secure! Pin the Eagle along the centre edge of the GUSSET PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching the 3 dots of the pattern markings. Leave the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> sticking out the back. Sew from D on the beak down the front of the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and GUSSET PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to L on the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Leave a gap open on the GUSSET PIECES for turning and stuffing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 25<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at M so you can pin the body closed at the tail. Pin point L to E. (The tail, legs and wings will all be inside the body of your Eagle.) Sew the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> closed at the tail. Sew from M \u2013 L\/E \u2013 M on the other side.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

ASSEMBLY:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 26<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the eagle right sides out through the stuffing gap on the GUSSET<\/strong><\/span>. Stuff the beak very well, then stuff the head area and then the neck. Stuff the tail end next, followed by the rest of the body. Stuff the legs firmly.<\/p>\n

STEP 27<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the stuffing gaps closed with a ladder stitch using a double strand of machine sewing thread.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

Using the pattern markings to guide you, sew a long stitch using black embroidery cotton to create the nostril\u2019s on your eagle\u2019s beak.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\n<\/blockquote>\n
