I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased the pattern can SEE how to sew this stuffed toy bulldog! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Butch Bulldog sewing pattern!)<\/span>

Right, let’s sew a stuffed toy BULLDOG!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WE START WITH THE HEAD:<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 1a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the JOWLS PIECES<\/span> together from A – B. Leave the top edge open for turning.<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>I like to use a matching thread so you don’t see the stitching of the seams when your toy is stuffed. If you don’t have white, brown, black and light brown thread for the bulldog you can just use white for everything! \ud83d\ude42<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 1b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance (the fabric outside the sewing line) down to about 3mm (1\/8inch). This helps to make the seam easy to turn and nice and smooth.<\/p>\n

STEP 1c<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the JOWLS PIECES<\/span> right sides out and pin the open edges together.<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>I use a wooden chopstick to help me turn the seams nicely! Run the chopstick along the stitching of the seam inside the JOWLS PIECES<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 2a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/span> to the FACE PIECE<\/span> from C – D.<\/p>\n

Pin and sew the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/span> to the other FACE PIECE<\/span> from C – D.<\/p>\n

STEP 3a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the LIP PIECES<\/span> together leaving the edge open for turning as shown on the pattern markings. Trim the seam allowance down to about 3mm (1\/8inch).<\/p>\n

STEP 3b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the LIP PIECES<\/span> right sides out and use the wooden chopstick to turn the seams nicely!<\/p>\n

Pin the open edges of the LIP PIECES<\/span> together.<\/p>\n

EARS and EYES:<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 4a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the EAR PIECES<\/span> together in pairs, leaving the bottom edge open for turning. Trim the seam allowance at the top of each ear. This reduces the bulk of the fabric so the ears will be nice and pointed. (Be careful not to snip through the stitching.)<\/p>\n

STEP 4b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the EAR PIECES<\/span> right sides out and use the wooden chopstick to turn the seams nicely and pin the open edges together.<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>Transfer the dot pattern marking to the ears. The dots are to guide you so the ears are position the right way. I used a blue charcoal pencil – this will disappear with time and won\u2019t leave a mark on the bulldog\u2019s ear!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Place all the pieces for the bulldog’s head on the table in the the following order – CHIN<\/span>, LIPS<\/span>, SNOUT<\/span>, JOWLS<\/span>, WRINKLE<\/span> FACE&FOREHEAD<\/span> and finally, the EARS<\/span>! This is the order in which you will put them together.<\/p>\n

STEP 6
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the CHIN PIECE<\/span> to the LIP PIECES<\/span>, matching point E.<\/p>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the centre dart of the SNOUT PIECE<\/span> at E.\u00a0 *** DON’T sew the top darts now – this makes it easier to sew.***<\/p>\n

STEP 8a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the SNOUT PIECE<\/span> to the CHIN & LIP PIECES<\/span>, with the LIP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in between, matching E.<\/p>\n

STEP 8b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Check that the LIP PIECES<\/span> are between the CHIN PIECE<\/span> and the SNOUT PIECE<\/span>, then sew the SNOUT PIECE<\/span> to the CHIN & LIP PIECES<\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 9

Pin and sew the top darts in the SNOUT PIECE<\/span> at F.<\/p>\n

Turn the pieces over. Pin and sew the small darts in the CHIN PIECE<\/span> at G.<\/p>\n

This is what the pieces should look like now. (The pin is at the centre of the SNOUT PIECE<\/span> at H.)<\/p>\n

Pin the JOWLS PIECES<\/span> to the SNOUT<\/span> and CHIN PIECES<\/span> matching point H.<\/p>\n

The JOWLS PIECES<\/span> should line up with the dart on the CHIN PIECE<\/span> at G on each side.

Fold the WRINKLE PIECE<\/span> in half length-wise and pin it with fabric right sides out<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Pin and sew the FOREHEAD & FACE PIECES<\/span> to the WRINKLE PIECE<\/span>, JOWLS<\/span>, SNOUT<\/span> and CHIN PIECE<\/span> matching point H and K.

STEP 15a

Pin the EARS<\/span> to the FACE PIECES<\/span> with the dots of the pattern markings nearest to the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/span> (not the sides!).<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Check that he tips of the EARS<\/span> point OUTWARDS<\/strong>. I have used red highlighter to show you how it would look if the ears are positioned with the dots to the sides. The tips of the ears will point UP – this is WRONG!<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 16a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/span> together from L – M.<\/p>\n

Pin and sew the HEAD PIECES<\/span> to the FOREHEAD & FACE PIECES<\/span>, with the EARS sandwiched in between, matching point L and O.

STEP 17
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are going to embroider his eyes, do them AFTER the head is stuffed. If you are using craft eyes, insert these NOW.\u00a0 I used a circle of felt behind the eyes because I thought these craft eyes were a bit dark for a Bulldog. \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n

STEP 18a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TAIL PIECES<\/span> together. Clip the seam allowance especially at the very curved parts.

STEP 18b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the TAIL<\/span> with a little bit of toy stuffing.
\n\"Bulldog<\/p>\n

STEP 18c<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TAIL<\/span> in position on one of the BODY PIECES<\/span>. Look at the pattern markings to guide you. Make sure the tip of the tail touches the edge of the BODY PIECE<\/span>, that way it will be caught in the seam as you sew the BODY PIECES together and you won\u2019t have to sew the bulldog\u2019s tail tip down by hand after you have stuffed the bulldog. (I think this is a lot easier than hand-sewing!)<\/p>\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the BODY PIECES<\/span> together from P – Q, with the TAIL<\/span> sandwiched in between.<\/p>\n

LEGS:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 20 <\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the FRONT OUTER LEGS<\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/span>, matching the single cross pattern marking.<\/p>\n

STEP 21<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold, pin and sew the darts in the BACK OUTER LEG PIECES.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pin and sew the BACK OUTER LEG PIECES<\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/span>, matching the double cross pattern markings.<\/p>\n

STEP 23<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the TUMMY PIECES<\/span> together from P – R.<\/p>\n

STEP 24a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

The FRONT INNER LEGS<\/span> are made up of 2 parts. Pin and sew them together in pairs from S – T.<\/p>\n

STEP 24b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the FRONT INNER LEG PIECES<\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/span>, matching the single dot pattern marking.<\/p>\n

STEP 24c<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the BACK INNER LEG PIECES<\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/span>, matching the double dots of the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 25a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TUMMY & INNER LEG PIECES<\/span> to the BODY & OUTER LEG PIECES<\/span>. Use a few pins to get all the pieces lined up. Sew the pieces together at the back first and sew one seam at a time. Sew up the back of the BACK LEG PIECES<\/span> on one side and along the back of the BODY<\/span> and TUMMY PIECES<\/span>. Then sew down the back of the BACK LEG PIECES<\/span> on the other side.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Use lots of pins on the seam you are sewing. This will help to line up the pieces and stop them slipping as you sew.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 25b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew up the front of one of the front legs and along the BODY<\/span> and TUMMY PIECES<\/span> from U – V. Repeat on the other side.<\/p>\n

STEP 25c<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew up the front of the BACK LEG PIECES<\/span>, along the sides of the BODY<\/span> and TUMMY PIECES<\/span> and down the back of the FRONT LEG PIECES<\/span>. Repeat on the other side.

PAWS:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 26<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the PAW PIECES<\/span> to the LEG PIECES<\/span> making sure that they are not back to front! They are slightly wider at the front but it is easy to get muddled.<\/p>\n

FINISHING THE EARS:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 27a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Transfer the star pattern marking to the front of the EARS<\/span> and measure and mark the centre of the EARS<\/span> at the base.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 27b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the EARS<\/span> down and pin them to the FACE PIECES<\/span> so the star pattern marking is positioned just in front of the centre of the base of each EAR<\/span>.

STEP 27c<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Lift the EAR and hold it back so you can hand sew the EAR<\/span> to the FACE PIECE<\/span>. Repeat for the other ear.<\/p>\n

\"Bulldog<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Use a matching thread and try not to sew through both layers of the EAR PIECES<\/span>. If you sew with small, neat stitches you won’t see any stitches from the front of the ears when they are sewn in place!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

FACE:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 28a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the NOSE<\/span> from wool felt and pin and sew it in place on the WRINKLE<\/span> and JOWLS PIECES<\/span>. Cut the TEETH and TONGUE PIECES<\/span> from wool felt, pull the LIP PIECES<\/span> down so you can position them in place on the SNOUT PIECE. I like glue the bottom of the TEETH and TONGUE PIECES<\/span> to the SNOUT PIECE<\/span> because you don’t sew all the way around.<\/p>\n

STEP 28b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Hide the knot for your thread ‘behind’ the LIPS<\/span> then flap the LIP PIECES<\/span> back up and hand sew the LIPS<\/span> to the SNOUT PIECE<\/span>. Try to catch the TEETH and TONGUE PIECES<\/span> in your stitching.<\/p>\n

NECK SEAM:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 29a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the bulldog’s head to the body at the neck seam. I find the best way to do this is to place the head between the BODY PIECES, so it is facing back into the body then pin and sew it in position.<\/p>\n

STEP 29b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Here you can see the head pinned inside the bulldog’s body ready to sew in place.<\/p>\n

STEP 30<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pull the head back out of the body. Pin and sew the bulldog closed from Y (on the CHIN PIECE<\/span>) to W (on the TUMMY PIECES)<\/span>. Don’t forget to leave a gap open on the TUMMY PIECES<\/span> for turning your bulldog right side out!<\/p>\n

STUFFING:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 31<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the bulldog nice and firmly! I start with the LEGS<\/span>, then then I do the head. I make sure the SNOUT and CHIN<\/span> areas are firmly stuffed, then the FACE<\/span>, then the rest of the BODY<\/span>.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I use a long, round, child\u2019s paint brush to push small bits of toy stuffing into the legs. It helps me get the toy stuffing right down into them and makes it easier to stuff them firmly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 32<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the stuffing opening on the bulldog’s tummy closed using a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

Follow the diagram below to sew the bulldog’s toes.<\/p>\n
