I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased the pattern can SEE how to sew a memory dog toy (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my\u00a0Kip the KEEPSAKE DOG sewing pattern!)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

First choose some fabric:<\/span><\/h2>\n

You can create a \u2018patchwork\u2019 effect by using LOTS of different fabrics (for example, a memory dog from 6 – 8 items of baby clothes) OR use the Layout Diagram in the pattern to create a toy dog with a Main fabric and Contrast fabric.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prepare the fabric pieces:<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Must ALL fabrics be lined with interfacing?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here is an explanation of when to use interfacing (and when not to) ~><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

NO:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

You don\u2019t need to use interfacing to line the pieces if you are using all woven fabrics like quilting cottons<\/strong> and corduroy<\/strong>. Regular fleece<\/strong> bought off the bolt does not require interfacing. (I have NEVER interfaced fleece<\/strong> or Cuddle\u00ae<\/strong> and I have made a LOT of toys in these fabrics!)<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

MAYBE:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Specialty fabrics like minky<\/strong> or plush(fake furs)<\/strong> may require interfacing, depending on the manufacturer. If the fabric stretches more than regular fleece, use interfacing. When using fleece or specialty knits, take care not to overstuff the toy – if these fabrics stretch too much he\u2019ll be very chubby!<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

YES:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Use interfacing to stop the pieces from stretching out of shape if you are using clothing items<\/strong> that are made from very thin or very stretchy fabrics<\/strong>, or if you are using a mix of woven (non-stretchy) and knit (stretchy) fabrics<\/strong>. Always interface jersey knits like t-shirts<\/strong>\u00a0and baby onesies<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

HOW TO use iron-on interfacing<\/span><\/strong>:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Trace all the pieces, including all the \u2018reversed pieces\u2019, onto the smooth (NON-STICKY) side of the iron-on interfacing.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Roughly cut out the pieces from the interfacing but leave about 3mm (\u215b inch) extra around each piece. WHY? You\u2019ll cut them out neatly on the traced line after the interfacing is fused to the fabric.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Iron the interfacing pieces onto the fabric of the clothing items, with the STICKY (GLUE) side facing the BACK of the fabric. Follow the manufacturer\u2019s guidelines to make sure they are fused together well (stuck together).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Cut the pieces out on the traced lines.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n

     <\/p>\n

    How to embroider a memory toy:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

    You can embroider by hand or machine. Use the grid markings to center the embroidery design. Here you can see the grid on the FOOT PAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    If you are using machine embroidery – you will want to do this FIRST, <\/span>BEFORE<\/strong> you cut out the PIECES<\/span><\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    If you don\u2019t use the dots and letter pattern markings to guide you, it can be VERY easy to muddle up the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and sew them on upside down OR the wrong way around!<\/span><\/p>\n

    PLEASE transfer all of the letters and pattern markings onto your FABRIC pieces!<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

    I know I always say to do this BUT this time, with this pattern – I think it’s REALLY IMPORTANT<\/span> that you do it!!!!! It’s <\/span>the EASIEST<\/strong><\/span> way to guarantee you’ll get it right first time, and won’t end up UNPICKING pieces… (like I did a few times when sewing my prototypes!\ud83d\ude2b)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    What can you use to mark fabric?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

    There are LOTS of options for writing the pattern markings on the fabric pieces – I use pencil, ball point pen, permanent markers and erasable fabric pens.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    There are 2 types of erasable fabric pens<\/span>.
    \nAIR ERASABLE Fabric Markers<\/strong> <\/span>(disappear after a little while) are used when you don’t want your markings to be visible forever. These are great for drawing on the facial features before you embroider them BUT not when you want to see pattern markings and letters LATER while you’re sewing the toy!
    \nWATER ERASABLE<\/strong> Fabric Markers<\/strong><\/span> (you need to apply water to make these disappear) are great for pattern markings! (You don’t see these pattern markings from the right side of the fabric so you can also use a pencil, ball point pen, or permanent marker as above!)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    For dark<\/strong> fabrics I have used a white pencil crayon, a light coloured fabric chalk pen, and even a paint marker (which I took from my husband’s tool box!!!!).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Pin the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs (1 Main and 1 Contrast piece).<\/span><\/p>\n

    Sew the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together, leaving them open at the top edge for turning (See the green arrow in the photo below).<\/span><\/p>\n

    Trim the seam allowance around the bottom of the EAR PIECE<\/strong>S<\/strong><\/span> to 3mm (\u215b inch) and turn the EARS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.\u00a0 *** Do NOT stuff the <\/span><\/strong>EARS. We\u2019re going to fold them<\/span>!***\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Sew across the top of the EARS<\/strong><\/span> with a 3mm (\u215binch) seam allowance – this is so the layers won\u2019t slip as you sew the EARS<\/strong><\/span> in place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Cut a PATCH PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from felt and mark the eye position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    TIP<\/span>: How to cut Felt EASILY & ACCURATELY – <\/span><\/strong>5 different techniques!<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

    When you are cutting out small felt pieces, <\/strong>PINNING felt pieces is NOT as accurate as you’d think<\/strong>. This is because the pattern templates move or slip as you cut and you can end up with some very wonky shapes! I have put together this photo tutorial to show you 5 different techniques that I use to cut out Felt EASILY and ACCURATELY here<\/a><\/span><\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\n

    I think it’s easier like to cut the hole in the PATCH PIECE<\/strong><\/span> now (for the craft eye) but you can do this later when you insert the craft eyes (Step 11).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Pin the PATCH<\/strong><\/span> onto a FACE PIECE<\/span>, using the pattern markings to guide you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Sew the PATCH<\/strong><\/span> in place.<\/span><\/p>\n

    TIP: <\/strong>Try and use a matching thread when you sew on the felt pieces so that you won\u2019t see the thread if your stitching is a bit crooked! (This time I ‘cheated’ and used a blue, non-toxic permanent marker to draw over the white thread!)<\/span><\/p>\n

    Please double-check the fold placement in the EAR PLACEMENT DIAGRAM<\/strong> below – you don\u2019t want your ears to be on BACKWARDS! \ud83d\ude2b<\/span><\/p>\n

    Pin one of the EARS<\/strong><\/span> to a FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, using the pattern markings to guide you with the placement, with the fold of the EAR<\/strong><\/span> towards the BACK<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    STEP 4c
    \n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

    Pin the other EAR<\/strong><\/span> to the other FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0making sure to place the fold of the EAR<\/strong><\/span> towards the BACK.<\/span><\/p>\n

    STEP 5
    \n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

    Sew the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to one of the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Sew ONLY from A – B, do not sew to the edge of the fabric at the back of the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span>. (If you are a beginner: See the tip box below about pinning opposite shaped curved pieces together!)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    TIP: <\/strong>You must be careful to stop at point B, or you won’t be able to fold the piece correctly in the next step!<\/span><\/p>\n

    TIP: Pinning curves made EASY!<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

    If you\u2019re a beginner, you might be thinking – the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> don\u2019t fit together very well because they\u2019re different shapes? Don\u2019t worry – it\u2019s easy to join them.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    You just need PINS!<\/span><\/span>
    \n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Use this method & you\u2019ll be fine:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Pin the pieces together at the front.
    \n2. Pin the pieces together at the back.
    \n<\/span>3. Pin the pieces together in the middle\/at the EAR<\/strong><\/span>.
    \n4. Pin in between these 3 pins.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    PLEASE NOTE:<\/strong><\/span> The PIECE<\/strong>S<\/strong><\/span> will pucker up in certain areas in order to create a curve. This is normal! (When you have sewn the pieces together you\u2019ll see the result is a lovely rounded shape.)<\/span><\/p>\n

    Fold the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> back at point B, as shown on the pattern markings (with the fabric wrong sides together<\/strong>), and pin it in this position.<\/span><\/p>\n

    STEP 6b
    \n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

    Pin the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the other FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0with the EAR<\/strong><\/span> in between them. Sew from A – B. Sew a little bit past point B, BUT do not sew to C<\/strong> because this will make it difficult to fit the head to the body later!<\/span><\/p>\n

    TIP: <\/strong>I use a safety pin to hold the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together – so this reminds me NOT<\/strong><\/span> to sew to C! \ud83d\ude01<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    NOSE & SNOUT:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

     <\/p>\n

    PLEASE NOTE:<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

    The felt <\/span>NOSE PIECE<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>can be sewn on now by machine <\/span>Option a (Steps 7a – 7d) <\/span><\/strong>or sewn on by hand after stuffing the toy<\/span> Option b (skip ahead to Step 7e). <\/span><\/strong>Follow the method for the option that you want to use:<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Option a. MACHINE SEWING NOSE<\/span>:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

    STEP 7a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

    Sew the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from D – E only, as shown on the pattern markings – do NOT<\/strong> sew the whole seam, from F – G!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    TIP:<\/strong> It is VERY<\/strong> important that you ONLY sew from D – E because you won\u2019t be able to open the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> flat to machine sew the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> on if you have sewn the whole seam.<\/span><\/p>\n

    STEP 7b

    Cut the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from felt. Clip the seam allowance of the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at D and E so you can pin the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> flat on the front (right side) of the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    STEP 7c

    Using a dark\/matching thread, sew the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

    I used a white thread so you could see where the stitch line should be!\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Sew the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from F – E.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Mark the position of the NOSE<\/strong><\/span> with a fabric pen, on the RIGHT side of the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0– so you know where to place the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> after stuffing. (I don’t mark the bottom as well,\u00a0 in case I make a mistake and the felt won’t cover both marks!)<\/p>\n

    Fold the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with the fabric right sides together and sew the snout darts in the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from H – K, as shown on the pattern markings – see the red dashed arrows in the photos below. (1 dart on each SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> = 2 darts in total).
    \n<\/span><\/p>\n

    STEP 9

    Pin and sew, the the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FOREHEAD & FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    TIP: <\/strong>This seam is right in the middle of your dog\u2019s face, so take your time and use LOTS of pins. Pin the PIECES together at points G, H and F first…<\/span><\/p>\n

    …then pin in between these pins. (If you are a beginner it will be easier to sew one side at a time, i.e. pin and sew together from G – F, and then do the same for the other side<\/strong>).
