I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased the pattern can SEE how to sew a turkey soft toy (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Tom Turkey sewing pattern!)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

*The Turkey Sewing Pattern<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0is available to buy, from the Funky Friends Factory website as an Instant Download e-Pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n

First choose some fabric!<\/span><\/h1>\n

You can sew your Thanksgiving Turkey from most fabrics. I used quilting cottons and his tail stood up nicely. IF the fabric you are your fabric is floppy – you may need to line the TAIL with interfacing. <\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 1a

Sew the BEAK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together, leaving the straight edge open.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 1b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams and turn the BEAK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I use a wooden chopstick to push the ‘tip’ of the BEAK<\/strong><\/span> out to make it nice and pointy!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 1c

Stuff the BEAK<\/strong><\/span> with a little bit of toy stuffing and pin the open edge closed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pin the BEAK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to one of the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, using the pattern markings to guide you and sew it in position with a 3mm (\u215b inch) seam (See the dashed line in the photo below).<\/span><\/p>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from D – E with the BEAK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in between.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sew the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the GUSSET PIEC<\/strong>E<\/strong><\/span> from A – B, matching the single dot pattern marking, on one side…<\/span><\/p>\n

Sew the WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, leaving the front edge open.

Clip the seams well, especially where they are very curved ( and in between the \u201cfingers\u201d) and turn the WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the GUSSET & BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from F – E – F, with the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> in between.<\/span><\/p>\n

* I added the blue lines in the photo below to show you where the WINGS<\/span> are under the BODY PIECES<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This is a hard seam to sew, so take your time… and use LOTS of pins!!!!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 8b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Check that you have ‘caught’ the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> in the seams. This is what your turkey should look like from the right side.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the front of the Turkey closed from D – F (on the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>) and from F – G (on the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

TAIL\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Prepare the TAIL PIEC<\/strong>E<\/strong><\/span> template. The TAIL<\/strong><\/span> (labelled 1 – 13) has been split into 3 pieces to fit on the pages. Join these together to make one TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> You can use glue or sticky tape to join the parts of the TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 11a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the Tail Fabric in half and trace the TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> onto the wrong side<\/strong><\/span> of one of the pieces. Place the 2 pieces, right sides together, on top of the piece of Batting and pin all 3 layers together.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 11b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew through all 3 layers, leaving the inside edge open. Take your time to get the curves of the \u201ctail feathers\u201d nice and smooth.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 12a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut out the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> and …<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

…clip the seams well, especially where they are very curved, and in between the \u201ctail feathers\u201d(see the purple lines in the photo below).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> If your fabric is quite thick (or the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> isn’t turning nicely) you can trim the batting in the seam allowance (the fabric “outside the sewing line”) to 3mm (\u215b inch) BUT be very careful NOT to cut your stitching.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 13
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out, make sure the seams are turned nicely then pin them closed along the inside edge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sew the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in place with a 3mm (\u215b inch) seam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This is very important so the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> don\u2019t slip as you sew and you end up with a crooked tail!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sew the RUMP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from C – H, along the back seam.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pin and sew the RUMP PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the GUSSET & BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from J – C – J, with the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in between, matching the 3 dots of the pattern markings.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This is ALSO a hard seam to sew, so take your time… and use LOTS of pins!!!!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

LEGS:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 17
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs. Sew from K – L at the back, leaving the gap open for turning, and from M – N on the front.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 18
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the CLAW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching points N and L. Sew the CLAW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in place, sew right around without a gap.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 19a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams then turn the legs right sides out. Use a wooden chopstick to make sure the seams are turned nicely, especially the \u2018toes\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fold the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, as shown in the pattern markings, and pin them closed at the top with the seams together in the middle. (Pin M and K together).

Pin the legs to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> using the pattern markings to guide you. Point M must be facing\/touching the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.

TIP:<\/strong> Make sure that the \u2018toes are facing (touching) the BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> when you pin them in place so you get the feet the right way up!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sew the LEGS<\/strong><\/span> in position with a 3mm (\u215b inch) seam. This will makes this seam extra strong if the toy is for a young child who will certainly tug on them!<\/span><\/p>\n

Sew the BASE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together leaving the gap open for stuffing.

Pin the BASE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the RUMP & BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching points G, H, and J (with the LEGS<\/strong><\/span> in between). Sew right around the BASE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>S without a gap.

Turn Tom right sides out through the stuffing gap.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stuff the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> very well then the BODY<\/strong><\/span>, making sure that the neck area is very firm. Stuff the feet and sew ALL the stuffing gaps closed with a ladder stitch.

Cut the WATTLE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from felt and hand-sew this in place just under the BEAK<\/strong><\/span>. *** ONLY sew the top of the WATTLE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, leaving the rest of the WATTLE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to dangle free!***
