(I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Giraffe Sewing Pattern<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We start with the MANE:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 1<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the tassels of the MANE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> as shown on the pattern markings (about 5mm\/\u00bcinch in thickness.)<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I drew a chalk line on the felt so I could keep all the tassels the same length.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 2
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the MANE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to one of the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the neck, as indicated on the pattern pieces.<\/p>\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the other BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the first BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with the MANE<\/strong><\/span> in between. With the MANE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in place, sew the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from F \u2013 L, remembering to leave a gap open for stuffing later.<\/p>\n

HEAD and HORNS:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from E \u2013 F.<\/p>\n

STEP 5

If you are using CRAFT EYES<\/strong><\/span> insert these now.<\/p>\n

STEP 6a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HORN PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the HORN TIP PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 6b

Cut this one piece in half, as shown on the pattern markings, to make 2 pieces.<\/p>\n

STEP 6c
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold each piece (right sides together) and sew them along the side and top. Clip the \u2018corners\u2019 of the seam allowance at the \u2018tip\u2019 of each horn and turn them right sides out.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> The horns are small and can be hard to turn. I have a blog post to show you how to turn small softie pieces<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold two 5cm (2inch) pieces of wire\/chenille sticks in half and push the folded ends into each horn. (These help the horns stay up straight!)<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> It\u2019s NOT good to sew over chenille sticks (wire) – it can damage your needle and your machine if you hit the wire with the needle. Stop stitching on either side of the HORNS and sew them in place by hand.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

EARS:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together (one main and one contrast piece for each ear).<\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance at the tip of the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> then turn them right sides out.<\/p>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the sides of the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the centre. Pin or tack (baste) them in this position to stop them slipping when you sew them in place.<\/p>\n

STEP 11
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the horns and ears in position on the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. The inside of the ear (contrast fabric) should be facing\/touching the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

*The EARS<\/span> are outlined in blue
\nand the HORNS<\/span> are outlined in pink in the photo below.<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, at the neck seam, with the horns and ears in between. Sew over the horns by hand then sew the rest of the neck seam by machine.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> This is a tricky seam to sew, so use LOTS of pins or baste(tack) all the layers together so that the pieces won\u2019t slip as you sew.<\/p>\n

LEGS and GUSSET:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 13
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FRONT LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and BACK LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, matching the dots, and sew them in place, from A-B and C-D on both sides.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> You can sew one side at a time if you find it easier!<\/p>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FRONT LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from M- A on both sides.<\/p>\n

* I have outlined the INNER FRONT LEGS<\/span>
\nin blue in the photo below.<\/strong><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Roll up the front of the GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and pin it out of the way with a safety pin!<\/p>\n

STEP 15
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew one of the HOOF PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to each front leg at the hoof seam.<\/p>\n

STEP 16
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew up the back of each front leg, starting at the base of the HOOF PIECE<\/strong><\/span> at O and sewing through P, continue along the Giraffe\u2019s sides and down the front of each back leg from Q \u2013 R.<\/p>\n

STEP 17

Sew the 2 remaining HOOF PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the back legs at the hoof seams.<\/p>\n

TAIL:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 18<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TAIL PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and the TAIL TIP PIECE<\/strong><\/span> together.<\/p>\n

STEP 19a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the long (side) edges of the tail to the center with the WRONG<\/span> sides of the fabric together.<\/p>\n

Fold the tail in half (lengthwise again) to form 4 layers.<\/p>\n

Sew a line of stitching down the tail to hold it closed, you don\u2019t need to sew the whole way down the TAIL TIP PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, perhaps about 1cm (\u00bd inch) at most.<\/p>\n

STEP 19d
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the tassels in the TAIL TIP PIECE<\/strong><\/span> about 5mm (\u00bcinch) thick.<\/p>\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

With the tail in position between the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and the GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, sew the back legs closed. Sew from the base of one HOOF PIECE<\/strong><\/span> at O through T, up the back of the leg to L, then sew down the back of the other back leg to the base of the hoof, on the other side.<\/p>\n

* The black arrow<\/span> is pointing to the tip of the tail

Pin and sew the HOOF PAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in place.<\/p>\n

STEP 22
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold and sew dart 1 and dart 2 in the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>. (Remember – pin the fabric right sides together!)<\/p>\n

Pin the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. (Remember to pin the pieces with the fabric right sides together!)<\/p>\n

Sew the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from G \u2013 E \u2013 G.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Remove the safety pin and sew the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span> (match the 3 dots pattern markings).<\/p>\n

STEP 25a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the snout and neck closed. Sew one side at a time from A on the GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to Z on the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, closing dart 3 and dart 4 of the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 25b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the snout and neck closed. Sew one side at a time from A on the GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to Z on the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, closing dart 3 and dart 4 of the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Turn your giraffe right side out through the gap left at the back. (I use a children’s paintbrush to push out the seam snicely, it’s also great for getting the stuffing right down into the legs too!)<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the SNOUT<\/strong><\/span>, HEAD<\/strong><\/span> and neck area quite firmly with toy stuffing. If you are embroidering the eyes or using beads, sew these in place now.<\/p>\n

STEP 27b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are embroidering the eyes or using beads, sew these in place now.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> If the Giraffe is for a young child, use a thick embroidery thread and French knots rather than craft eyes or beads. I have a post about toy safety<\/span> <\/strong><\/a>on my blog with more toy safety tips and guidelines.<\/p>\n

STEP 28
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff each hoof very firmly, then stuff each leg, and lastly the body. Go back and check that the neck and top of the legs are stuffed firmly. Use a ladder stitch to close the opening on the Giraffe\u2019s back.<\/p>\n

SPOTS:<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 29
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the giraffe SPOTS<\/strong><\/span> or the 2x2cm (about 1 inch) SQUARES<\/strong><\/span> from left-over contrast fabric (or felt) and pin them in place on your giraffe. When you are happy with the way the SPOTS<\/strong><\/span> look, sew them on by hand with embroidery thread. If you don\u2019t want to sew on lots and lots of giraffe spots you can use a bright funky fabric with a \u2018busy\u2019 print instead!<\/p>\n
