I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Stu Sea Turtle Sewing Pattern<\/strong> can SEE how to sew a sea turtle toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Sea Turtle Sewing Pattern<\/strong>)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We start with the TAIL:<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 1
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together using the pattern markings to guide you.<\/p>\n

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> right sides out. Stuff the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> with toy stuffing and pin the open edge closed.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I use a wooden chopstick as my stuffing tool to make sure the seams are turned out nice and smooth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

FLIPPERS:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FRONT FLIPPER PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and BACK FLIPPER PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, like you did for the TAIL.<\/p>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out. Use a sharp pair of scissors to snip\/clip your seam allowance especially around the sharp curves.<\/p>\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin all the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> so that the edge seams lie flat.<\/p>\n

STEP 6
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stitch around the edge of each b about 5mm\/\u00bc from the outer edge to create a \u2018rim\u2019 around the outsides of the flippers. Stuff the FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> with stuffing, using just a little bit of stuffing, so they are
\nquite flat (thin).<\/p>\n

TUMMY:<\/h2>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the NECK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, from A – B along the tummy seam.<\/p>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> and FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> in position on the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, then set this aside.<\/p>\n

SIDE and HEAD:<\/h2>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the SIDE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together at the back, from C-D.<\/p>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew each BEAK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to a HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Take care to make sure that you are matching the single dots on the pattern markings, otherwise the turtle\u2018s head will look squashed and a bit funny!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 11
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew each HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to a SIDE BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, from E \u2013 A\/B.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Remember to match the 2 dots of the pattern markings so the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> is the right way up!<\/p>\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the NECK & TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BEAK,HEAD & SIDE BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> with the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> and FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> in between. Sew from G at the front past A\/B to D at the back, then back past A\/B to G on the other side.<\/p>\n

\"14.Sew-neck-&-Tummy-to-HEAD-and-sides\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Use LOTS of pins so the none of the pieces slip as you sew.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

SEW the HEAD CLOSED:<\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 13
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew from point K on the NECK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to G then along the top of the head to E, then continue sewing from E to H (to join the SIDE BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the front).<\/p>\n

SHELL and RIM:<\/h2>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the SHELL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> along the center<\/em> seam, matching the 3 dot markings.<\/p>\n

*** NB – The center<\/em> is much flatter than the sides<\/span><\/em>!***<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"16.Shell\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 15
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew two of the SHELL RIM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together along the edge seam. Repeat for the other SHELL RIM PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 16
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Open up the pairs of SHELL RIM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and sew them to each other at the front and back seams.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> It should form a frilly ring!

STEP 17a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Snip\/clip your seam allowance very well to make sure the edge seams of the SHELL RIM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> will turn nicely.<\/p>\n

STEP 17b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the edge seams of the SHELL RIM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> so they lie nice and flat. Sew right around the edge of the edge seam of all the SHELL RIM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> 5mm (\u00bcinch) in from the edge to create a \u2018rim\u2019 around the outside (just like the flippers).<\/p>\n

STEP 18
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the finished SHELL RIM<\/strong><\/span> to the SHELL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> along the rim\/shell seam.<\/p>\n

*** NB – The FRONT <\/em>is narrower than the BACK<\/em>!***<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the SHELL & RIM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the SIDE BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, leaving a gap at the back for stuffing. (The TAIL<\/strong><\/span>, FLIPPERS<\/strong><\/span> and SHELL RIM<\/strong><\/span> must be tucked inside.)<\/p>\n

\"22.Tuck-in-rimjpg\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> PLEASE DON\u2019T forget to leave the stuffing gap open otherwise you will have a lovely turtle with all his body bits stuck inside his shell and you won\u2019t be able to turn him right sides out!<\/p>\n

ASSEMBLY:<\/h2>\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn your turtle right sides out through the stuffing hole.<\/p>\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fill the head and body with toy stuffing. Hand sew the stuffing gap closed using a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

STEP 22
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut 2 circles of felt for the eyes. Place them in position using pins.<\/p>\n

Use thick embroidery thread to sew a French knot in the center of each eye then sew around the felt circle to secure it in place \u2013 see diagram. (Or use 12mm craft eyes instead)<\/p>\n
