I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Dragon Sewing Pattern<\/strong> can SEE how to sew a dachshund toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Diggles Dragon Sewing Pattern)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Right, let\u2019s sew a Dragon!<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

First choose some dragon fabric. I used glow in the dark fabric that I got from Voodoo Rabbit Fabrics<\/strong><\/a><\/span> a while back, for the dragon toy in the photo above, but you can make your toy dragon in almost any colour!<\/span><\/p>\n

FACE:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 1a
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together, leave the straight edge open. Clip the seams so the pieces can turn nicely.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 1b
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Turn the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right side out and pin the pieces so that they lie flat. Sew a line around the edge of the EARS<\/strong><\/span> 5mm( \u00bcinch) in from the edge.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 2<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Pin one of the EARS<\/strong><\/span> to a FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> between A and B, using the pattern markings to guide you.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 3
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the FOREHEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from B \u2013 A \u2013 D (with the ear in between).<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Fold the EAR<\/strong><\/span> and pin it to the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> matching point C.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 5
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Repeat Step 2 – Step 4 for the other EAR<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 6
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from G \u2013 E \u2013 F. Clip the seams like you did with the EARS<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 7a
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FOREHEAD & FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching points G and H.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 7b
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Trim the seams well at E and use a blunt object like a wooden chopstick to turn the seam well at E (this is the dragon\u2019s nose!).<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the darts in the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> (1 each side) and the SNOUT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> (1 each side)… There are 4 darts in total!<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the dart in the CHIN PIECE<\/strong><\/span> (only 1 at the front) then cut the slit at the back of the CHIN PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the CHIN PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the SNOUT & FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching points F, H and K.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 11
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

If you are using craft\/safety eyes insert them now. I added an \u00be inch\/18mm FELT circle behind the eyes to make them stand out against the fabric. Put the head aside.<\/span><\/p>\n

ARMS, LEGS, SPIKES and WINGS:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
\n

STEP 12
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the ARM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, leaving the gap open for stuffing, and turn them right sides out.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 13
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs. Remember to leave the gap open for stuffing. Do NOT turn them right sides out yet<\/span>…<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Pin the FOOT PAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching the 3 toes, use lots of pins so the pieces won\u2019t slip as you sew, then sew them together. Sew the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together then turn them right sides out.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 15
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACK SPIKE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together. Clip the seams very well then turn right sides out. I use lots of pins to keep the spikes flat but you can also use a cool iron to press them very lightly.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 16<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the TAIL SPIKE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together. Clip the points well, turn and pin the TAIL SPIKE<\/strong><\/span> so it lies flat.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 17
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, leaving the straight edge open. Clip the seams very well so they turn nicely. Using the pattern markings as a guide, sew the top stitching lines on the wings. (I use Fraystop to make sure these stitches don\u2019t come undone at the start and finish).<\/span><\/p>\n

BODY:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 18a
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew one BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TAIL ONE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>. Sew the other BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TAIL TWO PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, don\u2019t worry, IF you have followed the layout diagram you can only pin them together the right way! \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 18b
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the darts in the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> (1 on each side).<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 19a
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Cut the wing slit in the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to create a dart for the wings. Pin the WINGS<\/strong><\/span> in place.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 19b
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Fold the BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, fabric right sides together, and sew the WING<\/strong><\/span> inside the slit, using the pattern markings to guide you. Repeat for the other WING<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 19c
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Pin each wing back, flat against the BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and sew a line of stitching across the base of each wing, sewing through all layers (the BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and the WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span> inside.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>This will make the wings \u2018stand up\u2019 and stop them flopping forwards.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 20
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Pin the BACK SPIKE<\/strong><\/span> to one BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> using the pattern marking at the front of the BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to guide you.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 21
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Pin the other BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to them then sew the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together along the top, with the SPIKE<\/strong><\/span> in between.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 22
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Pin the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> and LEGS<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching the pattern markings.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>Turn the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> over and fold the ARMS and LEGS onto of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 23a
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew one side of the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to one BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> (with an ARM<\/strong><\/span> and LEG<\/strong><\/span> in between).<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 23b
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Pin the back of the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> in half and pin it ‘out of the way’ then sew the other side of the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the other BODY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> (with the other ARM<\/strong><\/span> and LEG<\/strong><\/span> in between) matching the BODY-TAIL<\/strong><\/span> seam, point N and point P on the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 23c
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Cut the slit at the front of the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> (this is so you can fit the head inside the body).<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 24
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the head to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching points L and M.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>I find the easiest way to do this is to turn the head right sides out and place it, facing backwards, ‘inside’ the TUMMY&BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 25
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Sew the CHIN<\/strong><\/span> and TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> closed, but remember to leave a gap for stuffing.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 26
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Turn your dragon right sides out.<\/span><\/p>\n

TAIL:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 27a
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Fold the end of the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> so that the seams are together.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 27b<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Push the end of the tail inside the opening of the TAIL SPIKE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Stitch through all the layers of the SPIKE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to secure them in this position then sew a line of top stitching, around the edge of the TAIL SPIKE<\/strong><\/span>, 5mm \/ \u00bcinch in from the edge.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>Use Fraystop on your top stitching to stop it coming undone.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STUFFING:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 28
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Fill the snout and head firmly with toy stuffing first. If you are embroidering the eyes do them now. Stuff the neck and tail then fill the rest of the body. Use a ladder stitch to close the opening on the Dragon\u2019s TUMMY PIECE<\/strong>. Fill the arms and legs and sew them closed with a ladder stitch.<\/span><\/p>\n
