I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Hippo Sewing Pattern<\/strong> can SEE how to sew my hippo toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my Heather HIPPO stuffed toy sewing pattern<\/strong>!<\/a>)<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

OK, let\u2019s get going with the TUTORIAL!<\/span><\/p>\n

CUTTING OUT:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 1
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Choose fabrics for sewing your hippo toy pattern. For my hippo, I used a bright pink fabric for the TAIL<\/strong><\/span>, TUMMY FRONT<\/strong><\/span>, TUMMY BACK<\/strong><\/span>, FOOT PADS<\/strong><\/span> and 2 EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. The rest of the pieces are cut from the main (turquoise-blue) fabric.<\/p>\n

BODY:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 2
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FRONT<\/strong><\/span> and BACK BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from E-F.<\/p>\n

TUMMY, LEGS and TAIL:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 3a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TUMMY FRONT<\/strong><\/span> and TUMMY BACK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> together, right sides facing.<\/p>\n

STEP 3b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew them together, leaving the gap open for turning and stuffing.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Finger press the seam open.<\/p>\n

STEP 4a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew a FRONT LEG PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and a BACK LEG PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from A-B and C-D (matching the dots of the patterns markings.)<\/p>\n

STEP 4b

Repeat on the other side.<\/p>\n

STEP 5a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together .<\/p>\n

Turn the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> right sides out. (I use a wooden chopstick for this!)<\/p>\n

STEP 5c
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Put a tiny bit of toy stuffing in the TAIL<\/strong><\/span>, (just so that it is not flat) and pin it in position on a BACK BODY PIECE. Baste in place.<\/p>\n

STEP 6
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from Q – N.<\/p>\n

STEP 7a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the SIDE HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from G \u2013 H on one side first…<\/p>\n

(NB*** Do NOT sew the whole seam!)<\/em><\/p>\n

… then the other side!<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> If you ‘open the pieces out it should look like this now-<\/p>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY & SIDE HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching point P. (It is important that this seam looks good as it is right at the front of your hippo\u2019s snout! So take your time to pin this well.)<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Turn the pieces over and sew with the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> on the bottom so you can make sure the fabric doesn\u2019t pucker as you sew.<\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the HEAD GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the SNOUT & SIDE HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching point O.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Again, turn the pieces over. Sew with the\u00a0HEAD GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span> on the bottom so you can make sure the fabric doesn\u2019t wrinkle as you sew.<\/p>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are using safety eyes insert these now. You’ll see from this photo tutorial that I only inserted the craft eyes once I had finished sewing my hippo BUT<\/strong><\/span> it is much harder… so do it now!!!!!<\/p>\n

EARS:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 11a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together and turn right sides out.<\/p>\n

Fold the open edge of the EARS<\/strong><\/span> into the centre and tack them in this position. This will stop them from slipping when you sew them in place.<\/p>\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Place the ears in position, the fold of the ear must line up with the seam joining the HEAD GUSSET<\/strong><\/span> and SIDE HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> on each side. Baste\/tack them in place.<\/p>\n

STEP 13
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> and HEAD GUSSET PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at the neck seam, from R – Q – R.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I find the easiest way to do this is to turn the head right sides out and position it facing into the body.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> in place, matching up the legs and point N at the tail end.<\/p>\n

Sew the back legs closed from M \u2013 N on one side first. (See the white arrow in the photo below)<\/p>\n

Then sew from M- N on the other side. (Again, see the white arrow in the photo below)<\/p>\n

Sew the side seams from K \u2013 L . (See the white arrows in the photo below)<\/p>\n

Sew up the front leg, along the side of the head to point G on both sides.<\/p>\n

STEP 18
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew a FOOT PAD<\/strong><\/span> to the bottom of each leg, matching the markings on the FOOT PAD<\/strong><\/span> with the front and back seams on the leg.<\/p>\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the rest of the seams before you turn your hippo right side out. Push the legs and head into the body cavity and then push them out through the stuffing gap.<\/p>\n

STEP 19

like I said, I inserted the craft eyes now, but it is MUCH easier if you do it at STEP 10 – when you are sewing up the head!<\/p>\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the head and legs quite firmly with toy stuffing. Fill the rest of the body until there are no puckers in the fabric. Sew up the gap on the tummy with a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut out the flower parts from felt and sew these onto\u00a0 you hippo. If you are embroidering the eyes, sew the eyes on now with black embroidery thread.<\/p>\n

STEP 22

If you have made your Hippo from a stretchy fabric like fleece, you can also create some cute little toes with some embroidery thread – follow the sewing diagram instructions in your pattern (It’s clearer than this web-sized image!).<\/p>\n
