Honey Teddy is one of the simplest teddy patterns around because she is NOT a traditional, JOINTED bear – the arms and legs are sewn into the seams – so you don’t need to know any special teddy-bear jointing techniques. Her slightly knocked knees and cute little bottom in the air, make her simply adorable. As you make her, you will learn the basics of how to make & sew your own soft toys and pick up a few tips & tricks to make it easy and FUN!<\/span><\/p>\n

First choose some fabric<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

You can make and sew this sweet teddy bear pattern from MOST fabrics. The Teddy in this photo tutorial was sewn with quilting cottons but I love making my teddies from FLEECE because it makes them so cuddly!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We start with the HEAD:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 1a

Pin the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> matching point A and B, and the 3 dots pattern marking.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Look at each pattern piece – the dashed line on the pattern piece is a useful guide to show you the FIRST seam you will sew on each piece.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 1b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from A \u2013 B.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> A 5mm(\u00bcinch) seam allowance is included\u00a0 – so you will sew 5mm(\u00bcinch) INSIDE the lines you traced. (Do not add on a seam allowance UNLESS the instructions tell you to do this<\/span>!<\/strong>)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sew the EAR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs leaving the straight edge open. Clip the seams and turn right side out and pin the straight edge closed. <\/span><\/p>\n

***Do NOT stuff the EARS!***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I like to use a wooden chopstick to help turn the seams nicely. Run the end of the stick back and forth along the stitching inside until the seam is nice and smooth.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the EARS<\/strong><\/span> in position on the FRONT HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> using the pattern markings to guide you.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Sew the EARS<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with a 3mm( \u00bc inch) seam allowance to hold them in place – crooked ears will make your toy look wonky.<\/span><\/p>\n

BACK HEAD:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from C \u2013 D.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with the EARS<\/strong><\/span> in between and sew the side seam, from E \u2013 D \u2013 E on the other side of the head.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> It’s easy to get muddled with LOTS of pieces…\u00a0 so use my “BEST TIP EVER<\/strong>” ~> Transfer the letters of the pattern markings to the fabric pieces – then all you need to do is match them up – and you can’t go wrong<\/span>!\ud83d\udc4d<\/span><\/p>\n

SNOUT<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 6
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the SNOUT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> at F so you can sew the head closed. Sew the SNOUT PIECE, FRONT HEAD and BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> closed from F- (via A\/B) – E – G.<\/span><\/p>\n

CRAFT EYES:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

STEP 7

If you are using CRAFT EYES<\/strong><\/span> insert these now. (If you are embroidering the eyes this gets done after the head is stuffed).<\/span><\/p>\n

Sew the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together, leaving the flat edge open.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clip the seams well and turn the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out. Place a little bit of toy stuffing in the tail and pin the straight edge closed.<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> in position on the TOP BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Sew the TOP BODY<\/span> PIECES<\/strong> together from L – M (with the TAIL in between).<\/span><\/p>\n

I have used a black dotted line in the photo below to show where the TAIL is (between the TOP BODY PIECES).<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Check that you have caught the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> in the seam. Unpick and fix this NOW if you haven’t!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ARMS<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 10a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the ARM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs, leaving them open at the top and remember to leave the gap open for stuffing the arms later.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clip the seams well and turn the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out and pin them closed at the top.<\/span><\/p>\n

To make things a bit EASIER for you – I made the <\/b>INNER LEGS pieces from ORANGE fabric<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and the <\/b>OUTER LEGS from BLUE fabric<\/span><\/span> – so you can tell them apart <\/b>in the photo tutorial AND see how they go together.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sew one INNER LEG PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to one OUTER LEG PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and repeat for the other leg. Remember to leave the gap open for stuffing the legs later. Turn the legs right side out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fold the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> so the seams are together at the middle….<\/span><\/p>\n

…and pin them with the seams, together at the middle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Place the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with the fabric right side up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking at the ARM & LEG PINNING DIAGRAM<\/strong><\/span> – pin one arm and one of the legs in position on one side of the TUMMY PIEC<\/strong>E<\/strong><\/span> then pin the other arm and leg on the other side.<\/span><\/p>\n

Repeat for the other ARMS PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Double check that the \u2018toes\u2019 of both legs are facing\/touching the table.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> If the toy is for a young child I recommend sewing the ARM and LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with a 3mm( \u00bc inch) seam allowance to hold them in place. This is great because it will make these seams extra strong.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Pin the TOP BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong>, with the arms and legs pushed inside. (Fold\/roll them up nice and tight!)<\/span><\/p>\n

Sew the TOP BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from N – L – N, remember to leave the gap open for stuffing on one side, between the arm and the leg (see where the black arrow is pointing in the photo below).<\/span><\/p>\n

NECK SEAM<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

With right sides together, pin and sew the head to the body at the neck seam<\/span>, matching point G.<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I find the easiest way to do this is to turn the head right sides out and position it inside the body so you can pin the pieces with the fabric right sides together.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Pull the head back out of the body and sew the teddy closed along the top of the TOP BODY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and BACK HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are using beads or buttons for eyes, sew them on now. You can read about LOTS of other options you can use for toy eyes<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (if you don’t have craft eyes).<\/span><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> If you are sewing Honey Teddy for a child under the age of 3 years old –\u00a0 it is best to use felt circles for the eyes or to embroider the eyes. I have a blog post here with<\/span> more tips on toy safety.<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
