I have put together a photo tutorial<\/strong> to show you just how easy it is to make an owl softie<\/strong> from my Owl Toy Sewing Pattern<\/strong>\u00a0~> scroll down for step-by-step photos!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Choose some nice bright fabrics<\/strong> for your toy owl.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

I used cotton quilting fabric BUT you can use stretchy\/knit fabrics like fleece for a more cuddly feel, or corduroy for some funky texture!<\/p>\n

OK, let\u2019s get cracking\u2026 with the TUTORIAL!<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 1a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the owl FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together, leaving the gap open for turning.<\/p>\n

* I have added a red line in the photo below to show you where to sew.<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 1b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out. Tuck the seam allowance under (‘inside’) and pin the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> closed at the turning gap. Hand stitch the gap closed with a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> It is easier to turn the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> if you trim the seam allowance at the top ‘corners’.<\/p>\n

STEP 1c<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew a line of stitches around the edges, 5mm (\u00bcinch) in from the edge. This makes the edges of the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> nice and firm and also looks good!<\/p>\n

STEP 2 <\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the felt EYE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 3<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the BEAK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from felt. Use the pattern markings as a guide to position the BEAK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and sew it onto the FRONT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 4<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in position just above the BEAK PIECE<\/strong><\/span>. Use a sharp scissors to cut a hole through all the layers and insert the craft eyes.<\/p>\n

STEP 5<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold and pin the FACE<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> so that it will not get caught in the seams when you sew the owl together.<\/p>\n

* Poor Owl – looks like he has a HEADACHE!!!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 6<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in pairs onto a piece of quilt battling (with right sides of the fabric together)<\/p>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the battling very close to the sewing line.<\/p>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Snip the seams of the WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span> before turning them right sides out.<\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the top stitches on the WING PIECES<\/strong><\/span> as shown in the pattern markings. You can also make up your own squiggly pattern for the top stitching if you want to! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin one WING<\/strong><\/span> to the BACK PIECE<\/strong><\/span> as shown on the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

STEP 11a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

With the WING<\/strong><\/span> in between, sew the SIDE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BACK PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 11b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

REPEAT for the 2nd WING<\/strong><\/span> on the other side.<\/p>\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides together, leaving the straight edge open. Clip the seams well, especially in between the curves!<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Turn the TAIL PIECES<\/strong><\/span> right sides out. I use a wooden chopstick to make sure the seams are nice and smooth!<\/p>\n

STEP 13
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> top stitching lines as shown in the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin and sew the TAIL<\/strong><\/span> to the BACK PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

* I have folded the edges of the TAIL<\/span> and pinned them out the way so you can see the seams better in he photo below.<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 15
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FRONT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the SIDE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> on each side.<\/p>\n

STEP 16
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the SIDE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> so that they fold at B, then pin and sew the BACK<\/strong><\/span> and FRONT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together at the top. Sew right across the top of the Owl from B \u2013 A \u2013 B.<\/p>\n

STEP 17<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Make sure you have cut out 2 CLAW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and 4 HALF CLAW PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 18<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew 2 of the HALF CLAW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>(on the left) and the other 2 HALF CLAW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BASE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> (on the right).<\/p>\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BASE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the body and don’t forget to LEAVE A GAP<\/span> for turning and stuffing!<\/p>\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Open up the HALF CLAW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to they look like an X, and pin the CLAW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to them. (Remember to pin the fabric right sides together!)<\/p>\n

Sew the CLAW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and HALF CLAW PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together. It’s MUCH EASIER<\/span> if you do this in 2 steps – sew the top FIRST<\/span> (See the black arrows in the photo below). Turn the CLAWS<\/strong><\/span> around and sew the bottom of the CLAWS<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 21<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Using a turning tool, turn your owl right sides out. Make sure all the parts are properly turned. ( Again, I used an my wooden chopstick!)<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 22<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff your owl with toy stuffing. Make sure to stuff the CLAWS<\/strong><\/span> very well so they are nice and firm. For the BODY<\/strong><\/span> start using small bits of stuffing to get right into the corners, then fill the rest of the body.<\/p>\n

\"Stuff<\/a><\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Don’t stuff the BODY<\/strong><\/span> too much – the owl must look like a triangle from the side – NOT a circle! \ud83d\ude00<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 23<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the turning gap closed with a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n
