First choose some fabric<\/span><\/h1>\n

You can\u00a0 sew your Santa from most fabrics, non-stretch fabrics (like cotton, corduroy and quilting fabrics) as well as stretchy\/knit fabrics (like fleece, velour, chenille, minky and similar fabrics). <\/span><\/p>\n

Santa doesn’t have to be red!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Right, let’s get sewing!<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Face, Nose and Beard:<\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 1a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trace the pattern markings for the face onto the HEAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> on the right side of the fabric. (This is so you can see where to place the NOSE<\/strong><\/span> and MOUSTACHE<\/strong><\/span>).<\/p>\n

STEP 1b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from pink felt. If you are sewing the NOSE<\/strong><\/span> in place by machine – do this NOW. Pin the NOSE<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, using the markings you traced to guide you with the position , and sew it in place.<\/p>\n

*NOTE<\/span>*<\/span>
\nIf you are sewing the NOSE on by hand – this gets done LATER on (AFTER the HEAD is stuffed).<\/span><\/h1>\n

TIP: <\/strong>Gently pull the top threads to the back and tie them neatly at the back for a neat finish that won’t come undone later!

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BEARD PIECE<\/strong><\/span>. Sew from A – B – A. (Use lots of pins – this is a very important seam as it\u2019s on Santa\u2019s face so you want it to be as neat and smooth as possible!)<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Sew this seam, with the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> down – so you can \u2018wiggle\u2019 the BEARD PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to smooth out any wrinkles as you sew and clip the seam well after you sew it – so it will lie nice and flat.<\/p>\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACKING PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the BEARD PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, matching point C, on both sides and the star pattern marking, at the bottom.<\/p>\n

Sew the HAIR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BEARD & BACKING PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Sew from D – C – E.<\/p>\n

Fold the HAIR PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, with the fabric right sides together, and sew the hair darts closed (1 dart on each HAIR PIECE<\/strong><\/span>).<\/p>\n

Sew the HAT FUR PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE, BEARD & HAIR PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, sew from F – D – A – G – A – D – F.<\/p>\n

Pin and sew the HAT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to HAT FUR PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, sew from F – G – F, matching the 2 stars of the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

If you are using craft eyes, insert them now. Cut a small cross in each FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to push the eyes through.<\/p>\n

Sew the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from J – M (leaving them open at the top, between J and K).<\/p>\n

Sew the BOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together in pairs. Sew down the front of the BOOT<\/span> PIECES<\/strong> to the X at the bottom. Clip the seams well.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I like to finger press the seams open at the front of the BOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, especially at the top as it make it easier to pin in the next step!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 12

Sew the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the LEG FUR PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Sew the LEG FUR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching the dot pattern markings on the sides.<\/p>\n

STEP 14

Fold the legs\u00a0down the front, as shown in the pattern marking, so you can sew them\u00a0closed. Sew down the back of the LEG, LEG FUR and BOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, from the top to Z at the bottom, leaving the gap open for stuffing (on the BOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>).<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>Clip the seams really well, especially at the bottom edge of the LEG FUR<\/strong><\/span>.

Pin and sew the SOLE PIECES<\/strong> <\/span>to the BOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching X and Z and the pattern markings on the sides of the SOLE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

TIP: <\/strong>I find this is easiest to sew with the FOOTPAD PIECE<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 facing down.

STEP 17
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams well then turn the LEGS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out and pin them closed at the top so that the seam is in the centre at the back of each LEG<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

***DON\u2019T stuff the LEGS now – or they won\u2019t fit
\ninside the body when you sew it together!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 18
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Using the pattern markings to guide you, pin the top of the LEGS<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, (with the front of the LEG PIECES<\/strong><\/span> touching the FRONT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.) Sew the LEGS<\/strong><\/span> in place with a 3mm(\u215binch) seam allowance.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> If the Santa is for a young child you can also zig-zag across the top of the LEGS<\/strong><\/span> (and later on, the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> as well) so they are held in place extra firmly!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and sew them together, at the sides from E – N (with the LEGS<\/strong><\/span> dangling down).<\/p>\n

STEP 20a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Push Santa’s legs back up ‘inside his body…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

STEP 20b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

… and pin the BASE PIECE<\/span><\/strong> to the FRONT & BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching point M,N and O. Sew right around the BASE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> without leaving a gap.<\/p>\n

ARMS:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the\u00a0ARM PIECES<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to the ARM FUR PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Sew the\u00a0ARM FUR PIECE<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to the MITTEN PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching the pattern marking dots.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the arms\u00a0 together in pairs. Leave the straight edge open at the top and leave the stuffing gap open at the back.<\/p>\n

STEP 23a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams well, especially around the \u2018thumb\u2019 area…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I like to use a wooden chopstick to help turn the seams nicely. Run the end of the stick back and forth along the stitching inside until the seam is nice and smooth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 23b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

…then turn the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out.\u00a0Pin the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> closed at the top so both points E are together at the middle of the top edge.<\/p>\n

*** DON\u2019T stuff the ARMS now
\n– or they won\u2019t fit inside the body!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 24a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the ARMS<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to the right side of the fabric of the FRONT & BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching point E.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> To make sure the hands are the right way round – check that the \u2018thumbs\u2019 point towards the FRONT PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 24b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> in place with a 3mm(\u215binch) seam allowance.<\/p>\n

STEP 25

Turn the body wrong side out (right sides in?) and push the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> and LEGS<\/strong><\/span> \u2018inside\u2019 the body.<\/p>\n

NECK SEAM:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 26a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> to the BODY<\/strong><\/span> at the neck seam. This is the trickiest seam so take your time and use LOTS of pins! I find this is easiest if you start by pinning the BACKING PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the FRONT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> at H…<\/p>\n

STEP 26b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

… then pin the HAIR PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, at K on both sides. Then add LOTS of pins in between to make sure the pieces don’t slip as you sew the neck seam. Sew the HAIR & BACKING PIECE<\/span><\/strong> to the BACK & FRONT PIECES<\/span><\/strong> from K – H- K.<\/p>\n

HAT:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 27
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pull the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> back out of the BODY<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0Pin and sew your Santa closed at the back from the top of the HAT<\/strong><\/span> to F – K at the back of the HAIR PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. Leave the stuffing gap open between K and J.<\/p>\n

STEP 28
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Trim the seam allowance at the ‘tip’ of the HAT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> and use a turning tool to turn the ‘tip’ of the HAT<\/strong><\/span> nicely NOW as you cannot do this later once the HEAD<\/strong><\/span> is sewn in place!<\/p>\n

HEAD:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 29a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

***Don\u2019t leave out the HEAD PIECES<\/span>
\nor you won\u2019t be able to stuff Santa\u2019s head properly!***<\/span> <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from F – G.<\/p>\n

STEP 29b<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Push the HAT<\/strong><\/span> back \u2018inside\u2019 your Santa and pin the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the seam of the HAT, FACE & HAIR PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, matching F and G.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> It is hard to get the seams to lie flat at F ( at the back of the HAT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>) but this is OK because you don\u2019t sew across that part.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 29c<\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the bottom edge of the HAT PIECE<\/strong><\/span>, leaving a gap at F. (Just sew as close as you can to point F, this will hold the stuffing in the head)<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I find it easiest to sew this seam with the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> facing down.<\/p>\n

ASSEMBLY:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 30a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn your Santa right sides out through the stuffing gap and stuff the HEAD<\/strong><\/span>, BODY<\/strong><\/span>, BOOTS<\/strong><\/span> and LEGS<\/strong><\/span>. Stuff the \u2018thumb\u2019 area of the MITTENS<\/strong><\/span> very firmly, then stuff the rest of the arms, leaving the top 1\u00bdcm (\u00bd inch) of the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> empty.<\/p>\n

STEP 30b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> and LEGS<\/strong><\/span> and BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> closed with a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

NOSE & MOUSTACHE:<\/span><\/h2>\n

STEP 31
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut the NOSE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from pink felt. Pin the NOSE<\/strong><\/span> in place using the markings you traced to guide you with the position and sew it to the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> with a blanket stitch (or use fabric glue to stick it down).<\/p>\n

\n

STEP 32a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Cut a rectangle of fabric for the MOUSTACHE<\/strong><\/span>. Trace the MOUSTACHE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> on the wrong side of the fabric and cut a slit on this piece as shown on the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

STEP 32b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Lay this piece of fabric on another piece, with the right sides together<\/span>. Sew right around the MOUSTACH<\/strong><\/span>E, on the sewing line you traced. Cut the MOUSTACHE<\/strong><\/span> out with a 3mm (\u215binch) seam allowance.<\/p>\n

STEP 32c
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Clip the seams at the middle so the MOUSTACHE<\/strong><\/span> will turn nicely.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 33a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the MOUSTACHE<\/strong><\/span> and use a wooden chopstick to push the seams out gently.<\/p>\n

STEP 33b

Stuff the MOUSTACHE<\/strong><\/span> and sew the turning gap closed with a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

(Use a matching thread – I just used a dark thread for this photo so you could see my stitching!).<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEP 34a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the MOUSTACHE<\/strong><\/span> in place, using a matching thread<\/span>, sew around the centre of the MOUSTACHE<\/strong><\/span> at least 3 times so it is nice and firm…<\/p>\n

STEP 34b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

…and then stitch the sides to the FACE<\/span><\/strong> and BEARD PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. (You could use fabric glue instead).<\/span><\/p>\n

STEP 35a<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew (or glue) the BLACK BUCKLE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> on top of the GOLD BUCKLE PIECE<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 35b<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew or glue the BUCKLE on the FRONT BELT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to cover the centre seam.<\/p>\n

STEP 36
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew a bell on the tip of Santa\u2019s HAT<\/strong><\/span> so it folds down. If you do not have a heavy bell, you can use a pom-pom BUT you will need to pull the HAT<\/strong><\/span> down to one side and sew the tip to the head to hold it down.<\/p>\n
