I have made this photo tutorial so people who have purchased my Slush Snowman & Ginger pattern can SEE how to sew this soft toy! (I wanted to explain this so you are not disappointed if you have found this page via a search engine and not from the link in my pattern.)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

STEP 1
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Choose some fabric. A snowman doesn’t have to be white. He looks great in bright Christmas fabrics too.<\/p>\n

I decided to make the pieces from LOTS of bright, solid fabrics for this tutorial – instead of ALL white. (I actually did this to make it easier for you to see how the different pieces go together…. but he looks so cheery!)<\/p>\n

FACE & HEAD:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n
\n

STEP 2<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from A – B, matching the 1 dot pattern marking(the white dot in the photo below).<\/p>\n

STEP 3
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold the fabric right sides together and sew the darts in the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> (2 on each piece, 4 altogether).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> I find it’s easiest to sew ONE dart at a time because they are close together. If you pin all of the darts at once it makes the darts very hard to sew! Look, I tried it and I decided NOT to do this again!!!!<\/p>\n

STEP 4
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from A – D, matching the 2 dots of the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

STEP 5
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the FACE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> from E – A – E, matching the 3 dots of the pattern markings.<\/p>\n

EYES:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n
\n

STEP 6
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Insert the CRAFT EYES<\/strong><\/span> at this stage if you are using them. (If you are using beads for your \u2019s eyes you will sew them on AFTER he is stuffed).<\/p>\n

BACK & TUMMY:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 7
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from F – G.<\/p>\n

STEP 8
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from B – H, along the front seam.<\/p>\n

STEP 9
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TUMMY<\/strong><\/span> and BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from E – J.<\/p>\n

ARMS:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 10
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the OUTER ARM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the INNER ARM PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in pairs, matching the star pattern marking and sew them together from K – L.<\/p>\n

STEP 11a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold and sew the dart closed at the top of each OUTER ARM PIECE<\/strong><\/span> at J.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> right sides out. (I like to use my chopstick turning tool to smooth the seams).<\/p>\n

STEP 12
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY and BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> matching point J and M.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> Check that the ARMS<\/strong><\/span> curve towards the TUMMY PIECE<\/strong><\/span> or they will be facing the back!<\/p>\n

SIDE SEAMS:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 13
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn the arms back the other way (with the right side in) and sew the TUMMY<\/strong> <\/span>and BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from O – M and continue sewing along the side seam of the INNER ARM PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, from M – P.<\/p>\n

FOOT:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 14
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the TOP FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from Q – R, matching the double cross pattern markings.<\/p>\n

*** It’s not obvious from this photo – so make sure you sew these pieces with the fabric right sides together!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fold and sew the dart closed at the front of each TOP FOOT PIECE<\/strong><\/span> at S.<\/p>\n

Sew the BASE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together from F – H, leaving the gap open for stuffing.<\/p>\n

Sew the BASE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to the BACK & TUMMY PIECES<\/strong><\/span>, from Q – O – F – O- Q.<\/p>\n

STEP 18
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the legs closed at the center by sewing the BASE PIECE<\/strong><\/span> to the TUMMY\u00a0PIECES<\/strong><\/span> from R – H – R.<\/p>\n

STEP 19
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the FOOT PAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> in place matching point S on the TOP FOOT PIECES<\/strong><\/span> and U on the BASE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

NECK SEAM:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 20
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the head to the body next. (I find it\u2019s easiest to turn the head right sides out\u00a0and place it facing into the body when you pin and sew the neck seam.)<\/p>\n

STEP 21
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Push the head back out of the body again, then sew your closed from\u00a0D on the HEAD PIECES<\/strong><\/span> to T (at the neck) and then to G on the BACK PIECES<\/strong><\/span>. (Sew from D – T – G.)<\/p>\n

CARROT-NOSE:<\/span><\/h1>\n
\n

STEP 22a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sew the CARROT-NOSE PIECES<\/strong><\/span> together.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

STEP 22b
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fold under a 5mm\/\u00bcinch seam at the base of the CARROT-NOSE<\/strong><\/span> and hand-sew this to\u00a0hold it under.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

STEP 22c
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff the CARROT-NOSE<\/strong><\/span> first with toy stuffing, making sure it is nice\u00a0and firm.<\/p>\n

ASSEMBLY:<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n
\n

STEP 23
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Turn rights sides out and stuff the head first<\/strong>. (It must be very firm and round!) Stuff the feet, legs, arms and then the rest of the body (Don\u2019t stuff the top of the legs too much or he won\u2019t be able to sit up nicely).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 24
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pin the nose onto the FACE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0Stitch the CARROT NOSE<\/strong><\/span> in place\u00a0using a ladder stitch.<\/p>\n

STEP 25
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are using beads (or buttons) for the eyes sew them on now. Sew on a mouth using embroidery thread and a back-stitch.<\/p>\n

STEP 26
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Use a ladder stitch to close the opening on the BASE PIECES<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

STEP 27
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Tie a piece of Christmas ribbon around your Snowman\u2019s neck for a scarf. I have a blog post tutorial to show you how to make a NO-SEW scarf <\/strong><\/span><\/a>for your Funky Friends toys… and yourself!<\/p>\n

STEP 28
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Decide which method to use – depending on the fabric you have chosen.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

STEP 29 – Template 1: For knit fabrics
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

If you are using TEMPLATE 1<\/strong><\/span> – fold the fabric with the right sides together and trace TEMPLATE 1<\/strong><\/span> onto the wrong side of the fabric. Do NOT cut out your pieces now<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sew on the sewing line, and remember to leave a gap for turning and stuffing.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cut the pieces out with a 5mm\/\u00bcinch seam allowance around your sewing line. I added some pink lines to show you where I clipped the seam allowance.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Turn your Gingerbread Man right sides out.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

STEP 30 – Template 2: For felt
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

If you are using TEMPLATE 2<\/strong><\/span> – cut out 2 pieces and sew them together with a 5mm\/\u00bcinch seam allowance, remembering to leave a gap for stuffing.<\/p>\n

ASSEMBLY – (Both TEMPLATE 1 & 2)<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

STEP 31
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Stuff Ginger with toy stuffing – just enough so he\u2019s not flat (or too fat!).<\/p>\n

STEP 32a
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Use red embroidery thread to sew on a SMILE and black embroidery thread to sew French knots for the EYES. (*See the tip below about toy safety!)<\/p>\n

Sew on 2 buttons…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong>\u00a0 * I used 3mm(1\/8inch) black beads for the eyes. Don’t use beads or buttons if your toy is going to be for a child under the age of 3 years, because they would be a choking hazard. Decorate his arms and legs with silver, gold, green or red ric-rac.<\/p>\n

OR any trim that you think will make him look

STEP 33

Sew the stuffing gap closed. (I did this on the sewing machine for TEMPLATE 2<\/strong><\/span> and by hand for TEMPLATE 1<\/strong><\/span>).<\/p>\n
